Bronchos Run In Rout Of Newman

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team cruised to a 94-61 win over Newman Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.
 
The Bronchos improved to 9-7 with the win, and avenged an early season loss against Newman.
 
"We had some guys step up today and I'm really proud of them," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "Jaden Wells, Shemar Smith, Davon Richardson, and Conner Calavan all scored in double figures today. They're all just freshmen. I'm really proud of them and happy for them. They helped us a lot today."
 
Richardson led all scorers in the game with 18 points and Wells, Smith, and Calavan each hit three 3-pointers.
 
Richardson, a freshman from Sand Springs was 7-for-12 from the floor, 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. He added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Richardson's 18 points follow his 22-point outing on Wednesday.
 
Smith scored a season-high 15 off the bench. The redshirt freshman from Norman was 6-for-8 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Calavan, who also came off the bench, scored a season-high 12 points. The freshman from Fort Gibson was 3-for-5 from the field – all from outside. Wells, a freshman from Hurst, Texas, scored 11 points and hit three 3-pointers as well.
 
Central Oklahoma also got a big game from senior Isaiah Wade, who scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. He was just 3-for-7 from the field but added 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. Wade also had four blocked shots.
 
Camryn Givens scored 11 points to be the sixth Broncho in double figures, Callen Haydon scored eight points and dished out six assists, and Carson Calavan added six points to round out the scoring for the Bronchos, who led for 37:15 of the game Saturday afternoon.
 
Newman took a 3-0 lead 16 seconds into the action. Wells tied it, 3-3, 98 seconds into the action. And then two free-throws by Richardson just under three minutes into the action gave the Bronchos a 5-3 lead. Central never trailed again.
 
UCO led by seven points at the first media timeout, 12 points at the second media timeout and eventually 31 by halftime. The Bronchos shot 48 percent in the first half, made seven 3-pointers and added eight more free-throws to build a commanding lead.
 
Wells had all of his 11 in the first half, hitting 4 of 7 shots. He was 3-for-6 from behind the arc and played 18 of 20 minutes before halftime.
 
Central Oklahoma made a 31-point lead at halftime and turned that into 36-point lead midway through the second half. The Bronchos finished the afternoon 33 of 67 (49.3 percent) and hit 12 3-pointers. UCO also added 16 free-throws.
 
The Bronchos are scheduled to play at Rogers State Monday.
