Bronchos Power Past Rogers State

Central Oklahoma Wins 10th Game In Heated Contest

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team used an early second-half surge to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish Thursday night at Hamilton as the Bronchos beat Rogers State 93-83.

Central Oklahoma improved to 10-6 with the win.

"This was a wild game, the energy was high, the tension was high and I'm just really proud of our guys for finding a way today," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "That was a tough game against a tough opponent and we had some guys step up."

Trailing by just a point with over 15 minutes left in the second half, Central Oklahoma went on an 11-2 run to take command of what had been a back-and-forth slugfest of high emotions Thursday night.

Jaden Wells hit a jumper to give Central a 45-44 lead. The freshman then made a pair of free-throws to make it 4-0. Callen Haydon's layup moments later made it 6-0 before Rogers State found the basket with a layup. But Central answered that with a Shemar Smith jump shot and a Carson Calavan 3-pointer to go ahead 54-46 with 11-plus to play.

The Bronchos went 4-for-5 shooting during that 4:24 run and forced two turnovers.

Rogers State cut the lead to three points on three separate occasions over the next few minutes. But after the last of those, with 8:28 to play, Central went on another run.

Camryn Givens knocked down a jumper to give UCO a 64-59 lead. Then Wells hit a 3-pointer before Givens scored again to give Central a 69-59 lead.

Central would lead by as many as 15, 76-61, with 5:07 to play in the game. Rogers State got it back into single digits on a few occasions, but the Bronchos weren't looking back.

Wells led Central Oklahoma with a season-high 24 points. The freshman from Hurst, Texas was 5-for-11 from the field, 3-for-8 from behind the 3-point line, and a blissful 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. He also had seven rebounds and three assists.

Smith added a season high too. The redshirt freshman from Norman North scored 18 points off the bench. He went 6-for-9 from the floor, 1-for-4 from outside, and 5-for-9 from the free-throw line. Smith also had 10 rebounds and a pair of assists. Thursday was the first career double-double for the youngster.

Central Oklahoma had five players score in double figures Thursday. Haydon added 16 points. He, like Wells, hit three 3-pointers in the game. Haydon also had six assists. Givens scored 15 points to go with nine rebounds. The junior was 6-for-12 from the floor and hit one 3-pointer and one free-throw. Isaiah Wade also scored in double figures and also posted a double-double. The senior forward scored 11 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Calavan added five points off the bench and Davon Richardson scored four.

Central Oklahoma finished the game shooting 49.1 percent from the floor. The Bronchos hit 10 threes, shooting 35.7 percent from behind the arc. UCO also hit 27 of 36 free-throw attempts.

Central Oklahoma will be back in action this weekend for its final home game of the 2020-21 season. The Bronchos host Northeastern State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. before playing their final four games of the season on the road.
