Central Wins Wild Overtime Bout With Washburn

EDMOND – Camryn Givens hit two free-throws to reach the 40-point mark as part of a six-free-throw possession for the University of Central Oklahoma Thursday night as the Bronchos topped Washburn 97-87 in an MIAA battle at Hamilton Field House.

The scoring outburst by Givens is the 27th time in school history a player has scored at least 40 points in a single game. It's the first time since Feb. 7, 2007 when recent UCO Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Sam Belt scored 41 in a double-overtime win over Texas A&M Commerce at Hamilton Field House.

"He hit a few shots early that got him going and he was just dialed in," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "He was big late. We needed every single point from him. I'm really proud of him and our guys for the effort tonight. That team won the MIAA Championship last year and that's a good win for the guys."

Givens was 6-for-6 in the first half including a 4-for-4 mark from behind the 3-point line. He ended the game 11-for-13 from the floor, 4-for-6 from behind the arc, and 14-for-17 from the free-throw line. The 14 makes from the line for Givens tie the 10th-best performance in a single game in UCO history.

Central Oklahoma led by as many as 15 points in the first half and Washburn led by as many as five points with five minutes to play in regulation.

Givens tied the game, 75-75, with a free-throw with just under three minutes to play. Isaiah Wade tied it, 78-78, with 1:31 to go, then Davon Richardson tied the game, 80-80, with 1:06 to play.

Then it was Givens again, tying the game, 82-82, with 25 seconds remaining.

Washburn held for the last shot, but Jaden Wells drew a huge charging call with 4.4 seconds left to setup a potential game-winner. Givens caught in inbounds pass dangerously close to the sideline and the official whistled him out of bounds with two seconds remaining. Washburn missed a halfcourt shot that sent the game to overtime.

In the extra period, it was all UCO.

"We just say it's a new game," Givens said about heading to overtime. "It's 0-0 from there. Usually whoever can hit first has a good chance to win and we hit first."

Givens hit first.

He hit what most thought was his fifth 3-pointer, though a toe on the line made it just a two. Washburn got back in front with a 3-pointer on the other end, and led 87-86 with 3:08 to play, but the Ichabods never scored again.

Givens scored in the paint to put Central up 88-87, then again in the paint to make it 90-87. Callen Haydon hit a free-throw to give the Bronchos a 91-87 lead, then a wild finish ensued.

Haydon got a defensive rebound and darted down the floor on the break. He drew a foul and earned a trip to the free-throw line with 12 seconds remaining. During the brief pause though, Washburn's head coach was whistled for two technical fouls and was ejected from the game.

Givens stepped up to take the first two free-throws and found himself with 40 points after sinking them both. Haydon then knocked down the next two, and then his two from the original foul. The six-point swing of free-throws gave Central the 97-87 lead.

Givens finished with a game-high 40 points to go with three rebounds.

Wade had a huge game himself, posting an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double. Haydon scored 17 points to wo with four assists and three rebounds. And Wells had 14 points, three boards, two assists and two steals.

Richardson also scored eight off the bench.

Central Oklahoma shot 45.6 percent from the field Thursday night. The Bronchos were 9-for-28 (32.1 percent) from behind the 3-point line and 36-for-42 from the free-throw line. Both of the free-throw marks are the most in a game since Dec. 17, 2019.

Central Oklahoma continues MIAA play this weekend. The Bronchos host Emporia State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The two squads are the two highest scoring teams in the MIAA and among the best in the country. UCO enters Saturday's contest averaging 84.1 points per game while ESU comes to Edmond averaging 82.6.
