Central Oklahoma Dismantles Emporia State

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team, as the highest scoring team in the MIAA, welcomed Emporia State to Hamilton Field House with ESU the second-highest scoring bunch in the league. Saturday, the Bronchos raised that average and forced the Hornets lower.

Central Oklahoma 91, Emporia State 67.

"The guys played well offensively but I'm so proud of what they did on defense," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Emporia is a really good team and they've been scoring like crazy this year. For us to hold them 15 points below their average is a testament to our guys. They played awesome tonight."

UCO's scoring average is up to 84.9 points per game after nine games. The Bronchos are 7-2 overall and now have a 3-1 record in the MIAA.

Isaiah Wade led Central with 25 points Saturday afternoon. The senior forward had six rebounds too. He was 9-for-9 from the floor, including a 1-for-1 mark from behind the 3-point line, and went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line - a near perfect night.

And speaking of near perfect. Jaden Wells scored 21 points Saturday, going 7-for-8 from behind the 3-point line. The seven treys for Wells, a second-year freshman from Texas, is a new career high. He hit six in a game twice last February. Wells is 28-for-57 through nine games played, a league-leading 49.1 percent rate.

Camryn Givens added 14 points and seven rebounds. He was 6-for-10 shooting. Givens wrapped up a 54-point week after scoring 40 on Thursday night in an overtime win against Washburn. Callen Haydon added 10 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Preston Aymond chipped in seven points and Davon Richardson and Carson Calavan both scored three. Jalyn Turner, Conner Calavan, Danquez Dawsey and Landon Streich all scored two.

UCO and Emporia seemed locked in the first half with six lead changes. The game was tied three times. The Bronchos managaed a nine-point lead by halftime, using an 8-3 run to close out the half to get up 40-31 at the break. Emporia held as much as a six-point lead early, but when the Bronchos took the lead back on an Aymond 3-pointer with 6:39 left in the half, Central slowly began the takeover.

Out of the break, the Bronchos blew it open.

Central came out to score the first six points of the half, setting up a killer 18-4 run that put the game away in a hurry. UCO needed just five minutes to do it too. The Bronchos went 6-for-10 in that span, hitting two 3-pointers and four more free-throws. Central held ESU to 2 of 9 shooting in the five-minute stretch and forced three turnovers.

Emporia suddenly trailed 58-35. The Hornets cut the 23-point lead back to 17 a few minutes later, but the Bronchos eventually had a 30-point lead with three minutes to play.

Central Oklahoma shot 60.4 percent from the floor Saturday, hitting 32 of 53 total shots. UCO was 9-for-19 from behind the 3-point line, a 47.4 percent rate. The Bronchos also added 18 free-throws on 21 attempts.

UCO is back on the road next week to take on Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney in a Friday-Sunday league road trip.
