UCO Triumphs In Kansas

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team beat Pittsburg State 79-60 Saturday afternoon, earning the Bronchos their first conference win of the new season.

Central Oklahoma is 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA.

Isaiah Wade led UCO with 18 points and seven rebounds. Wade went 9-for-12 from the field in 22 minutes of play.

Callen Haydon also scored in double figures, posting 15 points to go with six assists and five rebounds. Camryn Givens scored 12 points to go with six boards and Jaden Wells made it four Bronchos in double figures with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Wells hit three 3-pointers and Givens added two more.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State exchanged leads five times in the first half, but after a Givens jumper gave the Bronchos a 20-19 lead, UCO never trailed again. Givens started a 16-10 run to close out the half, with Central hitting 7 of 10 shots down the stretch, and the Bronchos led 34-29 at the break.

Pitt State opened the second half with a 3-pointer to close the Broncho lead to two points, 34-32. But UCO had an answer. Wade hit a jumper, Jalyn Turner followed with a layup and Wells hit one of his 3-pointers to end a 7-0 run by Central. That increased the lead to nine, 41-32.

PSU got within four a bit later, but an 8-0 run by the Bronchos midway through the second half to begin to pull away.

Central shot 55.7 percent Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos hit 7 of 15 threes and only went 4-for-9 from the free-throw line for the entire game. But a stingy defense helped a solid offense. The Bronchos held Pitt State to 41 percent overall, only a lowly 13.6 percent from behind the arc, and just 55 percent from the free-throw line.

Preston Aymond added nine points off the bench, going 4-for-6 from the floor and 1-for-2 from behind the arc. Davon Richardson scored seven points, Carson Calavan added five, and Turner finished with two.

Central Oklahoma is back home next week for a pair of MIAA matchups. The Bronchos play Washburn Thursday night at Hamilton Field House before hosting Emporia State next Saturday.
