UCO Ends Year With Big Win

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team returned from a two-week layoff with a 20-point rout of Southwestern Christian Thursday night, extending the Broncho win streak to six games with the 87-67 victory.

Central Oklahoma improved to 10-2 overall this season. The Bronchos wrapped up the non-conference schedule for the 2021-22 season and will now only play MIAA contests in 2022.

"We didn't play sharp and we still need to work on some things," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "But we did enough to win and that's a good thing. It's good to come back from a break and get a win."

Jaden Wells led UCO with 21 points and 11 rebounds. The second-year freshman from Hurst, Texas was 6-for-17 from the field, including 5-for-16 from behind the 3-point line. He also went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Wells added one assist and one steal too.

Preston Aymond added 15 points off the bench and also had a double-double, tying Wells with a game-high 11 rebounds. Aymond went 6-for-10 overall, including 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line.

Davon Richardson also had a big game off the bench, scoring 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting to go with six boards. Isaiah Wade also scored 12 points to give Central four in double figures.

Carson Calavan had seven points and seven assists in his first start of the season. Camryn Givens added seven points and three boards, and Jalyn Turner scored five.

Central Oklahoma led for 39 minutes and 26 seconds Thursday night.

Southwestern Christian won the opening tip but missed a 3-pointer on its first possession. The Bronchos then got a layup from Givens with an assist from Calavan, and Central never looked back.

The Bronchos led 12-2 after three minutes when Richardson hit the first of his three 3-pointers on the night. It was 17-4 a few moments later when Connor Calavan hit a three.

SCU did manage a 7-0 run in the first half but couldn't get any closer to the streaking Bronchos.

Central led 45-29 at halftime.

UCO started the second half with a flurry to establish its authority in the matchup. The Bronchos hit threes on its first three second-half possessions while SCU managed two-point field goals in between the Central buckets.

A 13-6 run to open the second half, in a span of just over three and a half minutes, gave Central Oklahoma its biggest lead of the game Thursday. The Bronchos led 58-35 when Wells hit two free-throws after a Southwestern Christian technical foul.

The Bronchos outscored SCU 42-38 in the second half to reach 87 points, three points above Central's league leading scoring average.

UCO's 20-point win is the third in the last four games for the Bronchos. During the now six-game win streak, the Bronchos have won by double digits in each game and are averaging an 18.5 point margin of victory.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to play three MIAA games in six days next week. The Bronchos host Newman Monday at 7:30 p.m. before hosting Northeastern State Thursday at the same time. UCO finishes a four-game homestand with Rogers State next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
