UCO Crushes Newman With Wild Second-Half Run

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team pushed its win streak to seven games with yet another blowout victory Monday night at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma 87, Newman 66.

"We know we have to be better than we were at times tonight," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We didn't look like us in the first half. But, credit to the guys for coming together and getting it done tonight. If we can play the way we did for most of the second half, we're a pretty good basketball team."

Central Oklahoma and Newman only swapped the lead five times Monday and the game was tied twice. UCO owned the lead for 34 minutes and 53 seconds of the 40-minute night.

But the Bronchos were a bit clunky in the first half. UCO shot 38.5 percent from the field, hitting 10 of 28 shots and 5 of 14 3-pointers. The Bronchos were aided by a 10-for-15 mark from the free-throw line through the first 20 minutes.

Central led 35-32 at halftime.

In the second half, Newman went on a 10-6 run to take the lead, 42-41, with 15:45 to play in the game.

But this is where it all changed.

Jaden Wells hit a 3-pointer to put the Bronchos back in front 44-42 and that sparked an insane run by UCO to put the game way.

Central went on an 11-0 run starting with Wells's 3-pointer. He hit another after Isaiah Wade hit a pair of free-throws, then Wade had a monster dunk and added a free-throw for the and-1.

After Newman made two free-throws with 14 minutes to play, Central then went on a 15-0 run during which Wells hit two more 3-pointers.

The 26-2 run spanned just 5:04 of gametime and suddenly, after trailing by a point, Central Oklahoma led 67-44 with 10:26 to play.

Wells scored 14 points during the run while Camry Givens added seven and Wade added five.

The Bronchos went 7-for-8 overall during the run, 4-for-5 from behind the 3-point line, and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Central also forced six turnovers in the five-minute stretch.

Newman would outscore Central 22-20 in the final 10 minutes, but there was too much damage done with the incredible run by UCO.

Wade led all scorer's with 28 points Monday night – just one shy of his season-high. He also had a game-high 14 rebounds. Wade was 9-for-11 from the field, 1-for-1 from behind the 3-point line, and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. He pulled down 13 of 14 rebounds on the defensive end and also had one assist and three steals in the game.

Wells added 21 points, hitting 5 of 10 threes he took Monday. The second-year freshman was 5-for-10 from behind the 3-point line and 1-for-4 from inside the line. He also went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and added five assists and five rebounds.

Givens added 10 points and three boards. He went 3-for-5. Jalyn Turner (three) and Callen Haydon (one) helped out in the scoring load.

Preston Aymond gave Central a fourth double-digit scorer with 13 points off the bench. He went 4-for-6 overall, hit one 3-pointer, and made 4 of 5 free-throw attempts.

Carson Calavan scored five points off the bench, Davon Richardson added four points, five rebounds and four assists, and Danquez Dawsey added two points in reserve duty.

Central Oklahoma finished the night at 46.4 percent, slightly under its near 50 percent season average. The Bronchos hit 26 of 56 total shots, 10 of 28 3-pointers, and 25 of 33 shots from the free-throw line.

UCO entered the new year with the highest scoring average of any MIAA school at 84.3 points per game and the Bronchos raised that average Monday night. UCO has won seven straight games – all MIAA contests – and is averaging a margin of victory of 18.8 points per game. Central has won all seven games by double figures and has won each of the last three games by at least 20.

Central Oklahoma is just getting started with basketball this week. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Northeastern State Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton Field House before welcoming Rogers State to Edmond Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
