Last Second Tip-in Dooms Bronchos

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma freshman Jaden Wells made a layup with 11 seconds left while being fouled and his free-throw tied the game between the Bronchos and Missouri Southern State Thursday night in the 2021-22 MIAA opener. But unfortunately for Central, MSSU found a tip-in basket with 0.4 seconds left in the game to escape with a 77-75 victory over the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma, which led by as many as 13 points in the first half, is 4-2 on the season and now 0-1 in the MIAA.

Wells scored 12 points Thursday. He hit two 3-pointers and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Camryn Givens led all scorers with 30 points and also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Callen Haydon, with 14 points, gave Central three in double figures.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead Thursday. The Bronchos shot 57.1 percent in the first half, hitting three treys and seven more free-throws. The 13-point lead came early when Isaiah Wade earned a second-chance bucket with 12 minutes to play in the first half that put the Bronchos ahead 19-6.

Southern though, whittled away at the lead, getting it back to as close as four before halftime. Central led 42-35 at the break.

The game had just two lead changes and no ties in the first half. By the 11:46 mark in the second half, it was 50-50 and thoughts of a blowout were a distant memory.

Central still led late though.

Wade made two free-throws with two minutes left to play that gave the Bronchos a 72-68 lead. But a 7-0 run by MSSU made it 75-72 with 25 seconds to play.

That's when Wells earned his last three points, scoring on a driving layup in the paint with 11 seconds to play.

Missouri Southern drew up a play and the Lions actually missed what seemed like the final shot before a tip-in off the rebound handed Central a loss.

Wade finished with eight points and eight rebounds. He was just 2-for-6 from the floor. Preston Aymond scored seven points off the bench and Carson Calavan added two. Jalyn Turner scored two as well.

Central Oklahoma is back in action Saturday to wrap up the short, conference-opening road trip. The Bronchos play at Pittsburg State at 3:30 p.m.
