UCO Routs UNK For Fifth Straight Win

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team extended its win streak to five games Sunday with an 84-63 win over Nebraska Kearney.

Central Oklahoma is now 9-2 this season and 5-1 in MIAA competition this season. UCO has one non-conference matchup with Southwestern Christian – Dec. 30 in Edmond – before turning the calendar over to 2022.

"We played well tonight," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We shot the ball well and we were active on defense. The guys did a great job this weekend in playing with a concentrated effort to get the job done."

Nebraska Kearney took a 2-0 lead Sunday afternoon before a Jaden Wells 3-pointer gave the Bronchos a 3-2 advantage soon after the opening tip.

Central never trailed again.

The Bronchos went on a 9-0 run that started with Wells's three and included a layup, an alley-oop, and a dunk from Isaiah Wade.

UNK finally got another bucket to make it 9-5, but Central responded with an 11-0 run after that.

Preston Aymond and Wade both made baskets before Camryn Givens hit a 3-pointer. Callen Haydon added a layup and Aymond made a pair of free-throws that put Central Oklahoma ahead 20-5 with 11:51 to play in the first half.

Central hit 42.9 percent of its shots in the first half, building at one point a 17-point lead, 33-16. UNK closed the first half on a run of its own but the Bronchos still led 36-28.

Kearney opened the second half with a little run again and even closed the gap to just five points, 36-31. But after an and-1 from Givens pushed it back to eight, and one free-throw from UNK made it a seven-point game, back-to-back 3-pointers from Wells and Haydon started the UCO pullaway.

UCO hit four 3-pointers in the first half and as many in the first five minutes of the second half. The last of that from Wade gave UCO 53-41 lead.

Central added an 8-0 run and a 6-0 in the middle of the second half before settling on another 20-point victory.

UCO is averaging a 21.1 margin of victory in its last three wins. That number is 18.2 during the Bronchos's current five-game win streak.

Wade led all scorers with 29 points and had eight rebounds. He was 14-for-21 shooting and 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point line. Wade was also one of four Bronchos with two steals.

Haydon also had a season-high scoring with 27 points. He was 9-for-13 overall, a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the 3-point line, and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Haydon added eight assists and three rebounds to go with his two steals.

Givens scored eight points to go with a team-high nine rebounds and his two steals.

Wells had six points on two 3-pointers to go with his two steals.

Aymond also scored six, Jalyn Turner had four, and Carson Calavan had two points. Danquez Dawsey also added two points off the bench.

Central will take a break for the holiday before returning to the court for one final non-conference game Thursday, Dec. 30 against Southwestern Christian. The Bronchos pick back up in MIAA play Jan. 3 against Newman.
