Bronchos Blow By Nation's No. 1 Defense

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team put on a clinic Friday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum with the Bronchos blowing out Fort Hays State, 77-60.
 
Central Oklahoma entered the night the highest scoring team in the MIAA at 84.9 points per game. Fort Hays State, which entered the game 8-0 and No. 23 in the country in the D2SIDA Poll, owned the best defensive scoring rate not just in the league but the entire country, at 53.3 points allowed per game.
 
But UCO wouldn't have it Friday.
 
Central (8-2, 4-1) had 49 points at halftime and held a 20-point lead in the first 20 minutes. The Bronchos shot 55.6 percent from the field, hitting 9 of 18 threes and adding an 8-for-13 mark at the free-throw line.
 
Isaiah Wade led Central Oklahoma with 21 points. He added six rebounds and an assist. Wade went 9-for-14 overall, including a few monster dunks, 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 2-for-4 from the free-throw line.
 
Camryn Givens also scored 16 points for the Bronchos. He added seven rebounds, three assists and one block. Givens was 7-for-12 overall and 2-for-5 from outside.
 
Callen Haydon added 12 points with a game-high seven assists, upping his league-leading average dishing the basketball. He also had two boards and a steal. Haydon was 5-for-8 overall, 1-for-1 from deep, and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line.
 
Jaden Wells matched Haydon with 12 points. He did it on 4 of 9 shooting, hitting 3 of 5 shots from behind the 3-point line, and one free-throw on his only attempt to convert and and-1 layup. He also matched Givens with a team-high seven rebounds and added one assist.
 
Jalyn Turner scored three points to round out the starters for the Bronchos. Davon Richardson (five), Carson Calavan and Preston Aymond (three each) and DanQuez Dawsey (two) gave UCO 13 bench points on the night.
 
Central got off to a hot start and had Fort Hays State doubled up midway through the first half, 32-16. The Bronchos shot a blistering 66.7 percent overall in the first half, hitting eight 3-pointers and adding five makes from the free-throw line.
 
The Bronchos forced four turnovers in the first 20 minutes and had a 12-0 advantage in fastbreak points as they stormed ahead.
 
Fort Hays did outscore UCO 32-28 in the second half. The Tigers were paced by Kurtis Hammeke, who scored a game-high 30 points and made eight of Hays's 11 threes in the game.
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 8-2 on the season with the win. The Bronchos are 4-1 in MIAA games and on a four-game win streak. UCO wraps up the weekend road trip north with a matchup at Nebraska Kearney Sunday at 3 p.m.
 
Central will be home again Thursday, Jan. 30 against Southwestern Christian.
