UCO Falls To No. 4 Jennies

EDMOND (Nov. 9) – Central Oklahoma put up a tough battle, but in the end No. 4-ranked Central Missouri proved to be too much as the Bronchos dropped a four-set decision Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Jennies claimed a 25-13, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory in the home and regular season finale for UCO. The Bronchos fell to 19-9 on the season and 12-8 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, while UCM improved to 24-3 and 17-2.

UCO is assured of a fifth-place finish in the conference standings and will go on the road to play the fourth-place team in the first round of the MIAA Tournament next Tuesday.

"I was proud of the way we competed tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't get off to a good start, but we played pretty well after that and gave ourselves a chance."

Courtney Lane once again led UCO's balanced attack, collecting 12 kills along with 17 digs. Brynn Egger knocked down 10 kills, while Mallorie Koehn and Jenna Karp had nine apiece.

Nalani McCrary chipped in seven kills and Amanda Desch had a stellar all-around outing with 41 assists, 21 digs, five kills and three blocks. Katie Le made a season-high 31 digs in pacing the back-row defense.

UCM rolled to an easy first-set win and had a big lead in the second before the Bronchos came alive.

Kills by Desch, McCrary and Egger along with a ball-handling error allowed UCO to trim a 21-14 deficit to 21-18. The Jennies made it 22-18 with a kill, but Central answered with five unanswered points to take its first lead.

Egger started that surge with back-to-back kills, then Karp and Desch teamed up for a block before kills by Karp and Koehn put UCO on top 23-22.

Central Missouri tied it at 23-all before kills by Egger and Desch capped off UCO's big comeback.

The Bronchos fell behind 10-3 in the third set before battling back to tie it at 16-all on a Karp kill, but UCO couldn't complete the comeback and the Jennies went on to take the set.

Central jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set and was up 9-4 after a McCrary kill. UCM scored five straight points to pull even and it was close the rest of the way.

The Bronchos were within 19-18 after a Koehn kill, then the Jennies reeled off six straight points to close out the set and end the match.
