No. 12 UNK Ends UCO Season

KEARNEY, Neb. (Nov. 16) – Central Oklahoma's 2021 volleyball season came to an end Tuesday night at the hands of No. 12-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament.

The red-hot Lopers swept the Bronchos by the scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-13. UCO ended its season at 19-10, while UNK improved to 25-5 with its 12th straight win and moved into this weekend's semifinals against regular season champion Central Missouri.

The Lopers will take on the Jennies Friday, while Northwest Missouri and Washburn meet in the other semifinal in matches hosted by UCM. The two winners play for the MIAA Tournament title Saturday.

"UNK is playing as well as any team in the country right now and they were just too much for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I was proud of the way we battled tonight and I'm really proud of what we were able to do this season with such a young team."

The Bronchos, who finished fifth in the regular season standings, hit just .135 in the match while UNK had a stellar .368 attack percentage. The two teams split their regular season meetings, but the Lopers were too powerful on this night.

Mallorie Koehn led Central with nine kills, while Brynn Egger had seven. Courtney Lane added five kills and two blocks, Jenna Karp had four kills and three blocks and Katie Le dug up 18 attacks.

The first set was close throughout most of the early going and was tied at 11 before the Lopers surged in front, taking a 17-13 lead. UCO closed to within 21-19 on a combined block by Karp and Lane, but could get no closer.

The Bronchos fell behind 5-1 in the second set before rallying to tie it at 11-all on a Koehn kill, but UNK responded with a 5-0 run to take control.

UCO jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the third set in a bid to keep the match going. The Lopers came back with five unanswered points to regain the lead and went on to complete the sweep.
