UCO Advances to MIAA Championship Semifinals

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team beat Missouri Western 1-0 Sunday afternoon in the MIAA Championship Quarterfinals at Tom Thompson Field.

Central advances to the semifinals Friday and will play top-seeded Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri.

"We were fortunate to get the early goal," UCO associate head soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "I don't think we played very well offensively today but we did enough. And we did play well defensively. It's always great to get a shutout and as long as we win, we'll take it."

Kaitlyn Asher, who was named co-MIAA Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this week, played a full 90 in goal for the Bronchos Sunday and helped Central to its 11th shutout of the season. She made eight saves in the game and faced 11 total shots.

Central got its one goal early. Monika McGee got a pass from Kassidy Collins on the right side of UCO's attacking zone. McGee then sent a ball right in front of the MWSU goal and the Griffon goalkeeper tried to slide and corral it but couldn't. It trickled out in front and Madison Linavong was in the right place at the right time. She chipped in a sitter and gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play.

UCO had some other opportunities. Central took seven shots in the first half and put four on goal. But it did still remain 1-0 throughout. Central outshot Western 7-6 in the second half and put four more shots on goal but again, held firm to its 1-0 lead for the last 88 minutes of the game.

Linavong took a game-high six shots Sunday, with three on goal. Collins took two with one on target. Six other Bronchos took one shot each and four of them put their shots on goal.

Central Oklahoma will meet Central Missouri in the MIAA Championship Semifinals in Warrensburg on Friday. The Bronchos lost to UCM 3-1 in Edmond earlier this season. The two schools have met regularly in the postseason too. UCO beat Central Missouri 1-0 in Warrensburg in the 2019 MIAA Championship Semifinals. That loss for UCM was the first in 56 home games for the Jennies.

The winner of Friday's matchup will advance to the finals Sunday – also in Warrensburg. Emporia State and Northwest Missouri will play Friday as well in the other semifinal.
