Bronchos Ousted In Semifinals

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team erased an early deficit before an 87th minute penalty proved deadly and the Bronchos were eliminated from the MIAA Championship in the semifinals.

Central Missouri 3, Central Oklahoma 2.

"You hate to see the game end that way," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We fought so hard to get back in it, that was a great soccer game. We're hopeful we've done enough to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and now we wait and see."

Central Oklahoma trailed 1-0 in the eighth minute, and 2-0 before halftime. Despite the deficit, UCO controlled possession and outshot UCM 14-3 in the first half. It seemed only a matter of time before the Bronchos found the back of the net. And it wasn't much longer in the second half.

Madison Linavong struck first, putting home a shot in the 65th with an assist from Kassidy Collins to cut the lead in half.

Central Oklahoma kept pushing and soon found the equalizer.

Eden Jones took a shot from far out in the 72nd minute that nearly got in. The shot hit the cross bar and Adria Ramirez finished off the play and tied the game, 2-2, with less than 20 minutes to play.

UCO had a few more chances. Megan Wilson took a good shot that went wide left, Monika McGee got a shot on goal as did Lauren Hinnenkamp but both were saved.

Then came the ending.

With less than three minutes to play, Central Missouri made a charge into its attacking third. Just after the UCM player dribbled into then box, Meredith Wilson made a play on the ball and the official whistled a penalty.

Kaitlyn Asher, who played all 90 minutes Friday afternoon, couldn't stop the penalty and Central Missouri snuck away with a 3-2 victory.

Central Oklahoma ended up outshooting Central Missouri by a blistering pace of 28-7.

Linavong and Hinnenkamp both took a team-high four shots, as did Avery Holland. Katy Tullis took three shots. McGee, Collins, Jones and Ramirez each took two shots.

The loss snaps a three-year win streak by the Bronchos in the MIAA postseason. UCO won it at home in 2018 before winning at Central Missouri in 2019. The Bronchos also won the Spring 2021 MIAA Soccer Tournament in Edmond after the 2020 season was canceled.

UCO will tune in Monday, Nov. 15 to the NCAA Selection Show with anticipation as the 56-team field is announced for the 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship is announced. Central was ranked fourth in the most recent Central Region rankings. The top eight teams make the field.

Central has been to 14 national tournaments in 23 seasons of play.
