Egger Sparks Central Past Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Nov. 6) – Brynn Egger knocked down a career-high 17 kills to lead Central Oklahoma past Missouri Western in a hard-fought Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association contest Saturday evening.

The Bronchos pulled out a 25-22, 12-25, 25-21, 28-26 victory in improving to 19-8 overall and 12-7 in league play. UCO, which is locked into a fifth-place conference finish, hosts No. 2-ranked Central Missouri Tuesday to finish the regular season.

"It was a tough match and I'm proud of the way we battled tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't play our best, but made some big plays at key times and that made the difference."

Egger was the catalyst for the Bronchos as the freshmen outside hitter hit .351 with 17 kills and just four errors in 37 attacks. Courtney Lane had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Jenna Karp recorded nine kills.

Nalani McCrary contributed seven kills, with Mallorie Koehn and Lauren Jenkins notching four each. Amanda Desch dished out 44 assists to go along with 23 digs, while Katie Le (30 digs) and Bella Burns (17) also came up big defensively.

Karp had three kills in a 4-0 run that turned a 2-0 first-set deficit into a 4-2 lead and the Bronchos never trailed the rest of the way.

The Griffons bounced back with a dominating second-set win to tie the match, but UCO responded in the next two sets to claim the match.

Karp had two aces early in the third set as Central jumped out to a 6-1 lead. It was a seven-point advantage at 19-12 after a Egger kill and the Bronchos held on from there.

The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle throughout.

UCO trailed 17-14 before getting three straight kills from Karp and another from Desch in a 5-0 run in surging in front 19-17. MWSU answered with three straight points for a 20-19 lead, but Lane drilled back-to-back shots to put the Bronchos up 21-20.

The Griffons scored two straight of their own to regain the lead, then Egger and Lane had kills in a 3-0 spurt that put Central on top 24-22.

MWSU came right back to tie it at 24 and it was knotted again at 25 and 26 before the Bronchos finally ended the suspense with an Egger kill and Griffon attack error.
