Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Brannick

Bronchos Outrun Cameron

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team beat Cameron 87-71 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma improved to 4-1 on the season with the win.

"The guys did a great job of not letting a slow start bother them," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We didn't shoot the ball well early but we never gave up and when the shots started to fall, that made all the difference. And we played really well on defense too. The guys did a great job on keeping Cameron off balance."

Central Oklahoma shot 40 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes before posting a 53.1 percent mark in the second half. Cameron hit 53.8 percent of its shots in the first half before making only 37 percent in the second half.

Isaiah Wade led the charge for the Bronchos. The senior forward nearly posted a double-double, going for 21 points and nine rebounds. Wade was 7-for-16 from the floor, 2-for-2 from behind the arc, and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.

"We were getting the shots we wanted, just couldn't make them," Wade said after the game. "That's what happened in the second half, we just started making them."

Five Bronchos scored in double figures Saturday.

Callen Haydon scored 17 points to go with six assists and four rebounds. He was 5-for-9 from the floor, 2-for-3 from behind the arc, and went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Camryn Givens scored 16 points to go with eight rebounds. He had a game-high six makes from the free-throw line on eight attempts. Preston Aymond scored 13 points off the bench and Jaden Wells added 12 points, hitting two 3-pointers and adding two more free-throws.

Jalyn Turner and Davon Richardson both scored four points to round out the Broncho scoring.

UCO and CU, meeting for the 98th time on the hardwood, went back and forth throughout the first half. There were six lead changes and the game was tied four times.

Cameron struck first with a 3-pointer, but UCO went on an early 8-0 run to take a five-point lead three minutes into the contest. Cameron went back in front before the first media timeout, 12-10, and the trend continued.

Central made its biggest run of the game three quarters of the way through the first half.

The game was tied, 16-16, with just over 11 minutes left in the first half when Cameron went on a 9-0 run. UCO, down 25-16 with 7:40 to play, followed with a 10-0 run that included baskets from Haydon, Aymond, Givens and Wade.

The Bronchos went to halftime down just two points, 40-38.

A 5-0 run early in the second half tied the game, 46-46, then Central finally got back in front when Givens scored in the paint to go ahead 53-52 with 12:46 to play.

Cameron never led again.

Aymond scored nine of his 13 points during a key stretch in the second half. After two free-throws from Wells put UCO up 55-52, Carson Calavan stole the ball and Haydon dished off to a trailing Aymond, who slammed home a huge dunk to ignite the crowd. He scored in the paint again on the next trip down. Then Haydon hit a 3-pointer. Then Aymond had another big dunk before hitting a 3-pointer of his own to give Central a commanding 67-55 lead with 9:52 remaining in the game.

Central led by as many as 18 points when Haydon sank a pair of free-throws with just over a minute and a half remaining before UCO settled on the 87-71 victory.

Central Oklahoma has one non-conference game left on the schedule but UCO will open conference play first. The Bronchos play at Missouri Southern Thursday, Dec. 2 and at Pittsburg State Saturday, Dec. 4. UCO will return home Dec. 9 and 11 against Washburn and Emporia State.
