Lucas Leads Bronchos At Lindenwood Open

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Nov. 20) – Ty Lucas captured the 157-pound title to lead a large continent of Central Oklahoma placers in the rugged Lindenwood Open Saturday.

More than 400 individuals from 38 teams – including entrants from Division I powers Iowa, Missouri and Oklahoma State – competed in the all-day tournament where 13 mats were utilized.

The Bronchos, ranked fourth in Division II, sent 28 individuals to the event. Eight of 11 competitors in the Gold (open) Division finished in the top four, while 13 of 17 who wrestled in the Black (freshman-sophomore) Division placed in the top six.

Lucas lead the way in the Gold Division, with UCO also getting runner-up finishes from 125 Paxton Rosen, 133 Tanner Cole and 149 Brik Filippo. Studd Morris (125), Kalin Winkler (174) and Alex Kauffman (184) all came in third, while 165 Anthony DesVigne took fourth.

Central crowned three champions in the Black Division, with 157 Gabe Johnson, 197 Emmanuel Skillings and Hvy Judson Rowland all claiming gold medals. Garrett Steidley (125) and Hunter Jump (165) both finished second, while 149 Ryder Ramsey, 184 Kohl Owen and Hvy Braden Morgan took third.

"It was a really tough tournament and a long day for our guys," head coach Todd Steidley said. "I thought we wrestled hard and won some big matches. Obviously we had some setbacks, but overall it was a good day for us."

Lucas, ranked fifth in Division II, went 5-0 on the day. The All-American junior posted 10-3, 9-2, 9-4 and 13-4 wins in making the finals before disposing of McKendree's Jose Champagne 7-3 for the title.

Rosen followed an opening-round bye with a first-period fall and 5-3 win in making the finals before the returning All-American fell to Oklahoma State's Reece Witcraft.

Cole had the same path to the title bout, claiming 6-0 and 3-1 wins after a first-round bye. The junior All-American dropped a 6-2 finals decision to Iowa's Cullan Schriever.

Filippo also drew a first-round bye, then followed with 3-2 and 6-1 victories in making the finals before falling to OSU's Victor Voinovich.

Morris went 5-1 on the day in taking third. The sophomore had a 14-2 major decision in the first round before dropping a 9-4 decision, but he rebounded with four straight wins to take the bronze medal.

Winkler also went 5-1 in his third-place finish, winning his first match before losing in the second round. The junior rebounded with two falls and 4-1 win in making the consolation finals, before recording another pin in that match.

Kauffman followed a first-round bye with a 7-2 win before losing 3-1 in the semifinals to Division II's No. 3-ranked Dan Filipek of McKendree. He came back with two straight major decisions to take third.

DesVigne lost his first match of the day, but bounced back to win three straight in advancing to the consolation finals before losing 9-4 to McKendree's second-ranked Cory Peterson.

Johnson followed a first-round bye with a fall, 7-2 decision and 4-0 shutout in making the finals, then rolled over Liberty's Ian McIlhenny 11-2 to take the title.

Skillings cruised into the finals with three easy wins and a medical forfeit before trimming Maryville's Chase Stegall 5-3 for the championship.

Rowland wasn't tested on the day as the big man didn't give up a point. He followed an opening-round bye with two falls before finishing with 9-0 and 8-0 major decisions to cap off a dominating performance.

The Bronchos are off until going to Wichita, Kan. Dec. 5 for the Jet Invitational.
