UCO Drops Road Contest In Texas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team played its first road game of the 2021-22 season and the Bronchos suffered their first loss of the season, 86-65, Saturday afternoon at Midwestern State.

"They played really well and you expect that on the road here," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "They shot the ball really well and when we went cold for a bit, they jumped on us. We'll learn from this and move on."

Central Oklahoma went to Texas on a blistering scoring pace of 90 points per game over its first three games of the new season. The Bronchos shot 41 percent from the field Saturday, but just 19 percent from behind the arc. And UCO only managed a 9-for-12 day at the free-throw line.

MSU shot 57 percent from the field, 54 percent from behind the arc, and went 12-for-17 from the free-throw line.

Camryn Givens led UCO with 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting. He went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and added three rebounds and two assists.

Callen Haydon joined Givens in double figures. He scored 10 on 4 of 12 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers, to go with four assists.

Conner Calavan and Isaiah Wade both had eight points. Calavan also hit two 3-pointers and Wade added seven rebounds before fouling out.

Preston Aymond and Jaden Wells both scored seven. Aymond added six assists and four rebounds. Wells went an uncharacteristic 1-for-8 from behind the arc.

Jalyn Turner and Davon Richardson both scored three points while Carson Calavan added two.

UCO and MSU went back and forth in the first 20 minutes, with the teams exchanging the lead 13 times.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 5-point lead. Givens made the game's first basket and Haydon hit a 3-pointer. Both of them had two baskets as they scored the next five in the same fashion to give UCO a 10-7 lead.

The 5-0 lead was Central's largest lead of the first half. UCO also trailed by five on a few different occasions early. Midwestern State earned its largest lead of the first half, 23-18, 25-20, and again at 37-32. The Bronchos followed the last five-point deficit with a 6-0 run on back-to-back 3-pointers from Jaden Wells and Conner Calavan. MSU ended the half on a 7-3 run to take a 44-41 lead into the break.

MSU opened the second half with a 14-7 run before the first media timeout and the Mustangs never looked back.

The lead grew to as much as 21 points with the game's final basket that made it 86-65.

Central Oklahoma returns home but will have a brief break for Thanksgiving before playing Cameron next Saturday, Nov. 27 at Hamilton Field House.
