Wade, Wells Spark UCO

EDMOND (Nov. 13) – Isaiah Wade dominated the inside and Jaden Wells took care of the outside in leading Central Oklahoma past Mary 80-71 Saturday night at Hamilton Field House on the final day of the Central Region Classic.
 
Wade did most of his damage close to the basket in scoring 20 points while also hauling down 16 rebounds. Wells complimented that by knocking down five 3-pointers in an identical 20-point outing in addition to making five steals.
 
The Bronchos had three other double-digit scorers in finishing off their second win in two nights in the season-opening weekend event.
 
"We're by no means a finished product, but I like the fact we're 2-0," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "We're trying to get the right guys in the right spots at the right time and we're still not shooting the ball as well as we know we can, but we just have to keep working on our game."
 
Camryn Givens, Carson Calavan and Preston Aymond had 11 points apiece for UCO, while Callen Haydon dished out nine assists to go along with five points and two steals. Calavan also had six assists and Aymond had seven rebounds.
 
UCO trailed by as much as five in the early going and it was tied at 13-all when the Bronchos surged in front to stay. Wells drilled a 3-pointer from the wing to break the deadlock and Calavan followed with a layup before the Marauders scored to make it 18-15.
 
Givens then drained a trey from the top of the key off a Calavan assist and Wade rebounded a Mary miss before making a layup and suddenly Central led 23-15 with 8:42 left in the half.
 
The Bronchos went on to take a 43-32 halftime lead, but Mary scored eight points in the first two minutes of the second half to quickly cut that to 43-40.
 
Davon Richardson stopped that momentum with a short jumper, Wells followed with another long 3-pointer and UCO eventually pushed its lead to 14 at 76-62 with 4:11 left to play.
 
The Marauders wouldn't go away, however, using a 9-0 run to get within 76-71 with 1:03 remaining. UCO stepped up its defense the rest of the way and made 4-of-6 free throws in the final 51 seconds to close out the win.
 
Central finishes off a season-opening three-game homestand Wednesday, hosting Jarvis Christian at 7 p.m.
