Broncho Season Ends In National Tournament

EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team saw its season come to an end Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bronchos played Bemidji State to a 0-0 tie before losing 5-3 in a penalty kick shootout.

"We had our chances and we didn't get it done," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We played well, but couldn't convert. Hats off to Bemidji State."

Central Oklahoma controlled possession in the first half, outshot Bemidji 12-2, and worked nine corner kicks to none for BSU. The second half was a different game. Bemidji outshot UCO 4-2 as the Bronchos struggled to find a rhythm going into a stiff south wind. But UCO's defense still stood strong. Only one shot was taken in two overtime periods before the shootout.

In penalties, Taryn Kedzior, Monika McGee and Meredith Wilson all did their part in converting. Bemidji also did, but in the fourth round, Madison Hayes' PK was saved. Bemidji converted one more to win the match.

Central ended up taking 14 shots in the game, with five on frame. Kedzior took a game-high four shots. Wilson took two. Megan Wilson also took two.

Kaitlyn Asher, who saved a first-half penalty with less than a minute till halftime, made three saves in the game. Bemidji took seven total shots and three on goal.

UCO finished the 2021 season 13-5-3. The Bronchos made their 14th appearance in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship.
