UCO Upset Bid Falls Short

EDMOND (Oct. 9) – No. 10-ranked Northwest Missouri pulled out an epic fourth-set win and went on to hand upset-minded Central Oklahoma a tough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos owned a 2-1 lead and had two opportunities to close out the match in a see-saw fourth-set battle before the Bearcats prevailed 28-26. NWMSU pulled away down the stretch in the fifth set to claim the 18-25, 25-13, 20-25, 28-26, 15-10 triumph.

UCO fell to 13-4 on the season and 6-3 in the league, while the Bearcats improved to 13-2 and 6-1 in ending an 11-match losing streak to the Bronchos.

"It was a tough match that could have gone either way, but they made more plays at the end," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We played pretty well and just came up a little short against a really good team."

Courtney Lane – celebrating her 21st birthday – led Central with 13 kills, 18 digs and four blocks. Lauren Jenkins also had double-digit kills with 11 against just one error in 34 attacks in hitting .294.

Nalani McCrary, Jenna Karp and Brynn Egger had nine kills apiece, with McCrary adding six total blocks. Amanda Desch notched 43 assists, 18 digs and five kills.

Katie Le (25 digs) and Bella Burns (24) both came up big in leading UCO's back-row defense.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in taking the first set, but NWMSU answered back with an easy second-set win.

UCO overcame a series of deficits in winning the third set. The Bronchos trailed by as many as four and were still down 17-15 before ending with a 10-3 surge.

Kills by Karp, Lane and Desch along with a pair of Bearcat errors gave Central a 20-17 lead and Le's service ace capped off the big 25-20 victory.

The fourth set was a classic that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes.

UCO was down 22-21 before McCrary keyed a blocking frenzy. The sophomore middle blocker made a solo rejection that tied it, then teamed with Jenkins for another that put the Bronchos ahead and joined Egger for another that made it 24-22.

The Bearcats staved off elimination and scored three straight points to go up 25-24, but back-to-back Jenkins kills had Central in front 26-25.

The Bronchos couldn't close the deal, however, and NWMSU scored the final three points to steal the 28-26 win.

UCO fell behind 5-0 in the fifth set, ripped off six straight points of its own to go ahead 6-5 and was tied at 9-all after an Egger kill. But the Bearcats proved too much in the end, finishing the set with a 6-1 run to secure the win.

The Bronchos wrap up a three-match homestand Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest against Newman.
