Central Earns 10th Shutout In Senior Day Victory

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team wrapped up the 2021 regular season with a 1-0 win over Rogers State Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos finished the season 12-4-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the MIAA. Now Central turns to the postseason. The 2021 MIAA Championship begins next Sunday and UCO will host its quarterfinal match next week with the opponent still to be determined.

"I'm glad to get a win on senior day and I want to make sure and recognize that group," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They have done so much for this program and deserve to be recognized and applauded. I'm glad we got a win in our last home game for them. Now we need to focus on the next one, one at a time."

Central Oklahoma sent off its two super-seniors. Kaitlyn Asher and Meredith Wilson returned in 2021 after having their senior season canceled last fall. The Bronchos also recognized seven traditional seniors.

Sunday, Central had a tough time out of the gate against Rogers State. The Bronchos were outshot 8-5 in the first half and the team's played 45 minutes of scoreless soccer. This came after the Bronchos played Newman Friday night to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes.

But after halftime, Central found the back of the net.

Taryn Kedzior took a ball all the way down the left sideline before cutting in and sending a cross in front of the goal. Eden Jones was there and found the space to fire a shot and score to give Central Oklahoma a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

That was all the Bronchos needed.

Kelsi Gibson got the start in goal for Central and made one save in the first half, seeing eight total shots from RSU. She kept the clean sheet and handed that off to Kaitlyn Asher for the second half. Asher made three saves in preserving not only the win, but another shutout.

Central Oklahoma has shutout 10 opponents this fall.

Kedzior took a game-high four shots Sunday, with two on goal. Jones took three and put two of those on target. Wilson and Monika McGee also took three shots.

Central took 15 total in the game and put six on goal.
