UCO Gets Past Hornets

EDMOND (Oct. 30) – Four players had double-digit kills as Central Oklahoma overcame early struggles with a four-set Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos struggled in a 25-22 first-set loss, but overwhelmed the Hornets 25-12, 25-12, 25-18 in the final three sets to take the win. UCO improved to 18-7 overall and 11-6 in conference play.

"We made a lot of mistakes and really struggled in the first set," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made a few adjustments and played pretty well the last three sets. It was a good win for us."

Courtney Lane led a balanced offensive attack, hitting .343 with 16 kills. Brynn Egger hit .429 with 11 kills, while Jenna Karp and Lauren Jenkins had 10 apiece.

Mallory Hendrix chipped in six kills along with 46 assists and 14 digs, while Nalani McCrary had five kills and three blocks. Kaite Le (19 digs), Amanda Desch (13) and Bella Burns (10) had solid defensive outings for the Bronchos.

UCO had a 6-5 lead in the first set only to see the Hornets surge in front with a 5-1 run and went on to stretch their advantage to 18-11.

Egger had a pair of kills as the Bronchos rallied to within 20-17 and it was 23-21 after an ESU error, but Central wasn't able to complete the comeback.

UCO took control at the outset in the second, getting an ace from Le to start things and going up 3-0 on Karp's deep shot down the middle. The lead grew to 10-3 on a combined block by Karp and Lane and the Hornets got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Bronchos followed the same script in the third set and Lane was the catalyst, knocking down four quick kills as UCO zipped to a 7-1 lead.

Emporia got to within 7-4, but then committed four straight errors and the lead was back to seven at 11-4. The Bronchos pulled steadily away from there, getting four kills from Jenkins down the stretch.

The Hornets let most of the early going in the fourth set before back-to-back kills by Karp and Jenkins keyed a 4-0 run that put UCO in front 15-12 and the Bronchos went on to close out the match.

Central has just three matches left in the regular season. The Bronchos go to No. 3-ranked Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western next weekend before finishing at home against No. 2 Central Missouri on Nov. 9.
