Bronchos Fall TO No. 4 Washburn

EDMOND (Oct. 29) – No. 4-ranked Washburn handed Central Oklahoma a rare home loss Friday night as the Bronchos fell in straight sets in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association tussle at Hamilton Field House.

UCO dropped just its second home match in 12 tries with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 setback to the powerful Ichabods. The Bronchos fell to 17-7 on the season and 10-6 in league play, while WU improved to 21-3 and 13-2.

"Obviously Washburn has one of the best teams in the country and they were just too much for us tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I thought we played hard and really competed. We just have to put it behind us and get ready for tomorrow."

Central is back in action Saturday, hosting Emporia State at 3 p.m. on Hall of Fame Day. Former All-American Lacie Allen and former head coach Mark Herrin will be honored for their induction into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this fall.

The Bronchos hit just .145 against Washburn, which leads the conference in opponent attack percentage.

Courtney Lane led UCO with nine kills, while Jenna Karp hit .333 with eight kills and two blocks. Mallory Hendrix had a strong all-around outing with 21 assists, 15 digs and five kills.

Amanda Desch added four kills and Katie Le dug up 18 WU attacks.

The Bronchos never led in either of the first two sets, though the second one was close throughout. UCO trailed just 17-15 after a Karp kill and was still within two at 18-16 following Lane's snot down the middle, but the Ichabods went on a 7-2 run to end the set.

It was a battle delux in the third set, which featured 12 ties and seven lead changes.

Central led 7-4 at one point, but the Ichabods came back to go ahead 10-8 and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way. Desch's shot down the middle gave the Bronchos an 18-17 lead and it was 19-18 after another Desch kill.

Washburn asserted itself from that point, finishing the set with a 7-1 scoring spurt to finish off the match.
