Central Plays Newman To Scoreless Draw

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team tied Newman for the second time this season Friday night, with the two MIAA squads playing all 110 minutes scoreless.

The draw is the second of the season for both squads, which played to a 2-2 tie in Wichita, Kansas last month. Central's last scoreless tie was in 2019 against Newman.

"We certainly created a lot of chances but we just couldn't finish them off," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We played really well defensively and the ball was on our attacking half almost the entire game. You just wish you could have gotten one shot to go because we knew it was going to be a high scoring game."

Central Oklahoma is now 11-4-2 on the season and 7-2-1 in the MIAA. There is only one game left on the regular season schedule and that's Sunday at 1 p.m. against Rogers State.

UCO is playing for position in the MIAA Championship. The Bronchos had already qualified for the postseason before Friday's tie and now have secured a home match in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 7. The Bronchos can finish as high as second and no lower than fourth place.

"We don't want to worry about anything but Sunday's game," Cook said. "We need to come out and play a little better and keep creating chances and just worry about Sunday."

Central outshot Newman 21-5 Friday night. The Bronchos also outshot the Jets of Wichita, Kansas 25-5 in the first meeting last month.

Kaitlyn Asher, who played all 110 minutes in goal for Central, made three saves Friday night.

Kylee Wickersham took a team-high four shots for the Bronchos. Meredith Wilson and Taryn Kedzior both took three shots. Four other Bronchos took more than one shot. Wilson and Madison Linavong had two shots on goal each for UCO.

But unfortunately Friday none of the 21 shots found the back of the net.

Central took seven shots in the first half, 10 in the second half, three more in the first overtime and one in the final 10-minute period.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to host Rogers State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tom Thompson Field. The Bronchos beat RSU 2-1 last month in Claremore, Oklahoma. UCO will also honor its senior class before the game with a ceremony beginning at 12:45 p.m.
