Bronchos Cruise Past Missouri Southern

EDMOND (Oct. 26) – Six players collected at least five kills and Central Oklahoma overcame sluggish starts in all three sets to overwhelm Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Missouri Southern Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos trailed early in each set before surging to easy 25-12, 25-18, 24-14 wins. UCO improved to 17-6 on the season and 10-5 in league play, while the Lions fell to 3-21 and 0-14 with their 17th straight loss.

"It certainly wasn't our best performance, but we got the job done," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We struggled to get going in every set for whatever reason. Thankfully we found our rhythm each time and took care of business."

Central, which is now 10-1 at home this season, hit .277 in the match behind a remarkably balanced attack.

Jenna Karp hit .368 with a match-high nine kills to top the Bronchos, while Lauren Jenkins and Courtney Lane had seven apiece. Brynn Egger didn't commit an error in adding six kills, with Nalani McCrary and Mallorie Koehn contributed five each.

Mallory Hendrix handed out 27 assists to go along with 10 digs and Katie Le had another stellar defensive outing with 22 digs.

UCO trailed 8-6 in the opening set before McCrary's kill ignited a 6-1 spurt that put the Bronchos on top 12-9. It was a 13-12 lead when an MSSU service error signaled the beginning of the end.

That miscue made it 14-12 and Amanda Desch served the rest of the way as Central finished the set with a 12-0 run. Jenkins had five kills and Desch two aces during that devastating span.

It was close most of the second set, which featured 12 ties and six lead changes.

The Bronchos scored six unanswered points in breaking away from a 14-all tie, getting two kills from McCrary in that run, then Egger put down three kills down the stretch as UCO closed it out.

MSSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but once again the tide soon turned. Koehn had three kills in a 7-1 run that put the Bronchos in front 8-6 and UCO pulled steadily away from there.

Central is back at home this weekend for a pair of conference matches. The Bronchos host No. 4-ranked Washburn at 6 p.m. Friday before taking on Emporia State at 3 p.m. Saturday on Hall of Fame Day.
