Bronchos Sweep FHSU

HAYS, Kan. (Oct. 23) -- Central Oklahoma got back on the winning track with a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Bronchos rolled to 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 victories in improving to 16-6 on the season and 9-5 in league play while completing a season sweep of the Tigers.

"We played pretty well," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Anytime you can win on the road in this conference it's big, so I was really happy with our performance today."

UCO, which dropped a four-set decision at No. 16-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Friday night, cruised past the Tigers behind a balanced attack that saw six players record between six and eight kills.

Jenna Karp and Courtney Lane led the way with eight kills apiece, with Karp adding five blocks and Lane eight digs along with three blocks. Nalani McCrary, Lauren Jenkins, Mallorie Koehn and Brynn Egger chipped in six kills apiece, with McCrary adding three blocks.

Mallory Hendrix distributed 31 assists and also made 11 digs. Katie Le was once again a defensive stalwart for the Bronchos in digging up 28 attacks.

The first set was tied 6-6 before kills by Jenkins and Karp highlighted a 3-0 run that put UCO on top 9-6 and the Bronchos pulled away from there.

FHSU jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 5-1 in the second set, but the Bronchos came back to tie it a 9-all on a combined block by Hendrix and Karp. It was deadlocked again at 11-all before two straight McCrary kills put UCO in front to stay.

Central trailed again early in the third set, but pulled even at 8-8 and then used a 4-1 run to go ahead for good. Karp had a kill, then teamed with Lane for a block and McCrary had a solo rejection to key that surge.

The Bronchos are back home Tuesday to host MIAA rival Missouri Southern for a 6 p.m. contest at Hamilton Field House.
