UCO Falls To No. 16 Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. (Oct. 22) – Central Oklahoma put up a battle, but the Bronchos couldn't stay with No. 16-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the end in dropping a four-set decision Friday night at the Health and Sports Center.

UCO lost 17-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-25 in its second meeting of the season with the Lopers. The Bronchos, who knocked off UNK in four sets at home on Sept. 25, fell to 15-6 on the season and 8-5 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Central moves on to Hays, Kan. Saturday for a 2 p.m. league meeting with Fort Hays State.

"In the end we just didn't make enough plays," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "UNK has a great team and they're especially tough at home. We just have to move on and get ready for tomorrow."

Courtney Lane had a stellar all-around match to lead the Bronchos. The sophomore outside hitter collected a match-high 18 kills to go along with 16 digs and two blocks.

Brynn Egger hit .304 while making 11 kills, while Nalani McCrary (nine kills, three blocks) and Jenna Karp (eight blocks, five kills) were strong at the net. Mallory Hendrix handed out 45 assists to go along with five blocks.

Bella Burns (15 digs) and Katie Le (14) paced the back-row defense.

UCO fell behind early in losing the first set, but never trailed in the second set in tying the match.

Burns got the second set off to a rousing start with back-to-back service aces and Lane added a pair of kills as the Bronchos went up 5-1. The lead peaked at seven (22-15) after Karp's solo block, but UNK used a 6-1 run to get within 23-21.

Central closed out the set with consecutive kills by Mallorie Koehn and Lane, but the Lopers responded by taking the next two sets to take the match.
