UCO Tames Gorillas

EDMOND (Oct. 19) – Courtney Lane knocked down eight of her match-high 17 kills in a dominating fourth-set performance as Central Oklahoma dispatched Pittsburg State Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos ended a three-match losing streak to PSU with the 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-11 victory, improving to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. The Gorillas fell to 11-10 and 5-8.

"That was a good win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Pitt State has a talented team and they've given us a lot of trouble. Winning the first set was big and I thought we finished the match strong."

UCO scored the final five points of the first set to pull out that win, which proved pivotal when Pitt took the next set. The Bronchos used another rally to claim the third set, then cruised in the final one.

Lane added 16 digs, two service aces and a pair of assisted blocks in leading Central. Lauren Jenkins contributed 11 kills and three blocks, while Jenna Karp had 10 kills and six rejections.

Brynn Egger chipped in eight kills and four blocks, with Nalani McCrary making six blocks to go with three kills. Katie Le was fantastic on defense with a match-high 28 digs.

UCO jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set only to see the Gorillas reel off eight straight points to move ahead. PSU led by as many as six (20-14) and looked poised for the win when the lead was 23-20.

But consecutive errors gave the Bronchos new life, then McCrary teamed with Jenkins for a block before making a solo stop to put UCO on top 24-23. Another PSU error ended it.

The Gorillas pulled even with the second-set win and had a 12-11 lead in the third when Central took control. McCrary was in two more blocks as the Bronchos went on an 8-2 run to seize a 19-13 lead and PSU couldn't answer.

It was no contest in the fourth set. Lane had six kills and Karp two as the Bronchos grabbed a quick 10-1 lead and the outcome was never in doubt.

UCO goes on the road this weekend for league matches at Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.
