Central Oklahoma Tops Washburn

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team wrapped up a big weekend with a 1-0 triumph over Washburn in an MIAA match at Tom Thompson Field Sunday afternoon.

Taryn Kedzior scored off a free-kick in the 39th minute and that was all the Bronchos needed in the win.

"We played really well defensively today and that was key," UCO associate head coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "Our defense has been playing really well for a few weeks now and today was no exception. To get the shutout is big for them and to get the win is big for all of us."

The 1-0 victory Sunday is the seventh shutout of the season for the Bronchos, who are now 10-3-1 overall this fall. UCO is also 6-1-0 in MIAA contests, which is good for second place in the league table with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Sunday, Central was trailing 5-4 in shots taken as the first-half clock neared the five-minute mark, but UCO was putting together its stellar defensive effort as the offense worked to find a rhythm.

In the 39th minute, Central reserve Adria Ramirez took a pass from Brooke Moore at the top of the 18-yard box and was fouled by a Washburn defender. Kedzior lined up the free kick and snuck a low line drive with her left foot past the Washburn wall and passed the outstretched arms of the diving Washburn goalkeeper.

UCO went up 1-0 and that was enough.

Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal made five saves in the match to earn the win and her seventh shutout of the season.

Central Oklahoma ended up outshooting Washburn by a count of 20-10 in the game. Kedzior took a career-high seven shots in the game and put four on goal, including the game-winner.

UCO, which had a seven-game unbeaten streak snapped last Sunday, is now back to two in a row this weekend. Central has lost just once in the last 10 matches. Sunday's win also comes on the heels of the Bronchos knocking off previously unbeaten and No. 3 in the country, Emporia State on Friday night in Edmond.
