Central Powers Past Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma beat Fort Hays State 24-14 Saturday night in an MIAA matchup that ran the Broncho win streak to three games.

UCO is now 4-3 on the season following the win.

"We fought for this one," UCO head football coach Nick Bobeck said. "We really had to fight for this one. I'm proud of this team. We played well in a lot of areas tonight. It's a good team win."

Central Oklahoma trailed by seven in the first quarter and by four in the third quarter, but a determined squad took a lead midway through the third quarter and never looked back.

"You just have to keep fighting," Bobeck said. "Things weren't going really good a few weeks ago but we aren't about to give up. You just have to keep fighting."

Fort Hays State went down the field to score a touchdown on the first drive of the game, but the Bronchos had an answer.

Keats Calhoon completed a 13-yard pass to Markiese King before missing on his second attempt to Josh Moore. But on the third, it was all King.

Calhoon hit King in open space on a deep post and no one ever caught the junior wide receiver from Dallas, Texas. King sauntered into the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown reception.

The Bronchos had another big drive in the second quarter. UCO took over after a punt from its own 16 before running a huge 14-play, 84-yard scoring drive. A big 24-yard scamper from Jayce Gardner put the Bronchos in the red zone. Nicky Quevedo soon converted a 22-yard field goal to give Central a 10-7 lead.

Fort Hays State added a late touchdown to go ahead 14-10 at halftime.

After a couple of punts to start the second half, Central's offense found another big drive to retake the lead.

A big connection to King from Calhoon for 33 yards kickstarted the drive. A 20-yard touchdown pass to Daunte McGee from Calhoon capped off the 4-play, 59-yard scoring drive and gave the Bronchos a 17-14 lead.

UCO had the ball again marching down the field as the clock moved into the fourth quarter. And just two and a half minutes into the final frame, Central put the exclamation point on the victory.

Stephon Brown's 5-yard touchdown run capped off an 11-play, 93-yard scoring drive that put Central up 24-14 with 12:25 to play in the game.

And that did it for the Bronchos.

Fort Hays State punted on the next possession, lost a fumble after that, turned it over on downs after that, and missed a field goal on the final Tiger possession as Central Oklahoma lined up in victory formation before celebrating the win.

Calhoon finished the day 15-for-24 with 223 yards and two touchdowns. He also had six carries for 37 yards and was not sacked Saturday night.

King led the Broncho receiver corps with five catches for 134 yards, the latter a game high, and his one touchdown. McGee had four catches for 45 yards and his one touchdown.

Gardner led the Broncho rushing attack Saturday. The second-year freshman had 18 carries for 94 yards. Brown had eight carries for 52 yards and one touchdown.

Dylan Buchheit led Central's defensive effort, recording a team-high 11 tackles. He also had one big pass breakup in the second quarter.

Elijah Wright and Maleik Gray both had six tackles. Wright forced the late Fort Hays State fumble. Gray added one sack in the first quarter.

Robert Fuentes made two sacks in the second half to spark Central's late shutdown of Fort Hays State.

Central Oklahoma is back at home next week to celebrate Homecoming. The Bronchos are hosting Washburn Saturday, Oct. 23 with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
