Central Oklahoma Hands No. 3 Emporia First Loss

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team beat Emporia State 2-1 Friday night, handing the third-ranked team in the country its first loss of the season.

Central Oklahoma is now 9-3-1 overall this season and 5-1-0 in the MIAA. Emporia is 11-1-1 overall and also 5-1-0 in league play.

"The team gave it everything tonight," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They know what they're capable of and this was a great team win. Emporia is a good team and they got us early with the first goal, but the girls didn't let that change the way they approached the game. We found a way to tie and then found a way to get ahead. And then the team just played so hard to grind out a win."

Emporia State took a 1-0 lead in Edmond just 87 seconds into the match. The MIAA's leading goal scorer, Mackenzie Dimarco, flicked a shot over Central goalkeeper Kaitlyn Asher to put the Hornets on the scoreboard early.

But the Bronchos had a response.

In the 14th minute, Kylee Wickersham corralled a pass near midfield, showed some nifty footwork to create space from her defender, and then fired a shot from 40 yards out. The ball drifted high above ESU goalkeeper Jillian Patton, who got a hand on it, but not enough to deter it. The ball bounced once in front of the goal line as Patton fell to the ground. The second bounce was behind the line and Central tied the game, 1-1.

Not even one minute later, the Bronchos were back in the ESU box working on an opportunity. Meredith Wilson was all the way up field from her defensive position on the left side and an ESU defender was trying to fight for the ball with Wilson when she took her to the ground and the referee whistled a penalty.

Monika McGee stepped up to take the kick. She readied the ball, lined up her shot, and drilled home her team-leading ninth goal of the season to give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead. McGee already led the MIAA with four game-winning goals before Friday night. She now has five as Central spent the next 74 1/2 minutes keeping the highest scoring team in the league off the scoreboard.

UCO was outshot Friday night for the first time this season. The Bronchos only took 10 shots all game, but put five on target and two in the back of the net. Wickersham, McGee, and Taryn Kedzior and Eden Jones each took two shots while Wilson and Kassidy Collins took one each.

Asher played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos. She saw ESU take 18 shots, including 10 on target. Asher made a career-high nine saves Friday night.

Central Oklahoma is back at home again this weekend to wrap up a four-game homestand. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Washburn Sunday at 1 p.m. in another MIAA contest.
