UCO Falls In Warrensburg

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team dropped its MIAA match 3-0 at fourth-ranked Central Missouri Thursday night.

Central Oklahoma is now 14-5 overall this season and the Bronchos have a 7-4 record in league play.

"We knew it was going to be tough and I think the team played well," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "But they are a really good team and you have to play your best on every point. There's almost no room for error."

Courtney Lane and Lauren Jenkins led the way for the Bronchos with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Lane hit .273 in the match and also had one block on the defensive side. Jenkins hit well, posting a .310 percentage in the match. She also had one assisted block.

Mallory Hendrix totaled 16 assists and Amanda Desch had 14 as the two set the offense Thursday night. Katie Le had a team-high 22 digs while Desch was also in double figures with 12. Jenna Karp, who had five kills on offense, led the defense with three block assists.

Central Missouri scored first Thursday before the Bronchos answered right back on a Jenkins kill to tie the first set, 1-1. But an 8-0 run by the Jennies followed, setting the tone for the mountain of a task in front of the Bronchos.

UCO did rally to get the first set close. The Bronchos used a 7-2 run later in the set to get within two, 17-15, and then were within three, 21-18, before UCM finished off a 25-20 first set win.

Lane totaled six of her 12 kills Thursday in the first set.

Jenkins started the second set with a kill to put the Bronchos ahead 1-0, but another early run by the Jennies left UCO in a hole, 10-3 soon after. UCO struggled in the second set after the early run and never got back in it before UCM finished off a 25-16 win.

Jenkins had six kills in the second set.

UCO was its most competitive self in the third set. The Bronchos led 1-0, 5-4, and 6-5 early in the set. But once again it was an early Jennies run that flipped the momentum. The match was tied 7-7 before the Bronchos found themselves in a 12-7 deficit. UCO battled back again though, eventually tying the match 19-19.

In the end though UCM was too much. The Jennies won the third and final set 25-22 to take the sweep.

Central Missouri will visit Edmond for the 2021 regular season finale on Nov. 9.

UCO only had this match on the schedule for this weekend. The Bronchos already knocked off Newman 3-0 in Edmond earlier this week and will now take the weekend off before hosting Pittsburg State Tuesday, Oct. 19.
