Bronchos Fall To Jennies In League Play

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 setback against Central Missouri in an MIAA showdown at Tom Thompson Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 8-3-1 on the season and 4-1-0 in league play.

"We had a lot of chances early and some really good ones but we just couldn't get them to go our way," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "If we get any of those to go it would have changed the first half a lot. But they countered and got their chances to go. So hats off to them and hopefully we'll get a chance to take them on one more time in the postseason."

UCO outshot UCM 18-10 on the day. It was 10 shots to none in favor of the Bronchos less than 20 minutes into the game, but UCO couldn't bury any of the chances.

Kassidy Collins volleyed a shot just outside of the box, Monika McGee had a great look from a similar space, and Meredith Wilson put a shot on target from outside the 18-yard line but the Central Missouri goalkeeper saved them all.

In the 19th minute, Central Missouri's leading scorer Kassie Newsom found the ball in open space and took it all the way to a 1-on-1 with Kaitlyn Asher. The UCO goalkeeper was hard-pressed to stop the shot and UCM took an early 1-0 lead.

Newsom had another counter-attack score just four minutes later, putting the Jennies from Warrensburg, Mo. ahead 2-0. Newsome made it a hat trick with her third goal of the game in the 85th.

UCO's Harmony Turner scored the lone goal for the Bronchos. She took on several defenders on the left side of the field before finding enough open space to slip a left-footed shot past the UCM keeper. That made it 2-1 in the 64th minute.

The Bronchos pressed late, and continued to get several opportunities, but just couldn't convert. Newsom's 84th-minute goal put the game away.

UCO ended up outshooting UCM 18-10 in the game. McGee took a team-high four shots and Wilson and Collins both took two shots. Taryn Kedzior, Eden Jones, and Katie Gasaway all took two shots as well in the game.

Asher played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos and made three saves.

Central Oklahoma came up short Sunday in an upset bid of the 18th-ranked Central Missouri squad. The Bronchos will now turn its attention to fourth-ranked Emporia State, which comes to Edmond for a Friday night matchup this weekend.
