Central Swats Hornets In Road Triumph

EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team earned its second win in a row Thursday, beating Emporia State 71-59 in MIAA play at White Auditorium.

Central Oklahoma improved to 3-4 with the victory. It wasn't just the Bronchos' second win in a row, but also their second win by more than double digits.

"I'm really proud of the guys for the way they played tonight," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "So many of our guys, really each and every one of them, played well tonight. That kind of team effort is what helped us win and I'm really proud of that."

Central got a big, 18-point performance from Camryn Givens and a 13-point burst from Jaden Wells. Callen Haydon and Isaiah Wade also added 10 points apiece to help the effort.

Despite a 12-point victory by the Bronchos, Central actually needed to erase a near double digit deficit in the second half.

UCO trailed 37-28 at halftime, but came out of the locker room with the hot hand.

Wells made a layup early in the second half and Haydon made a pair of free-throws. Then Jalyn Turner knocked down a 3-pointer and Wells, after intercepting a pass near halfcourt, made a second layup to bring the Bronchos within two, 39-37.

Emporia went up 42-37 after that, but Haydon knocked down another jumper and Turner knocked down another 3-pointer and tied the game, 42-42, with 11:48 to play.

Emporia again made another small run and took a 48-42 lead with 9:41 to play, but then Central made its biggest push of the night.

Carson Calavan hit his second 3-pointer of the night before Wade scored another layup. Then Wells hit back-to-back 3-pointers before Haydon knocked in a free-throw following an Emporia technical foul. After another stop on the defensive end of the court, Wells sank his third straight 3-pointer to give the Bronchos what felt like a commanding 9-point lead, 57-48.

UCO had flipped a nine point deficit into a nine point lead in just over 13 minutes of play in the second half.

Central pumped its lead up to 17 points, 69-52, with just over four minutes to play in the game.

Calavan finished with nine points – all on three made 3-pointers – and just missed being the fifth double-digit scorer for the Bronchos. Turner scored six thanks to a pair of 3-pointers. D.J. Basey added five points and Justin Nimmer scored two.

Central Oklahoma will continue a weekend road trip Saturday. The Bronchos take on Northwest Missouri at 3:30 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
