Bronchos Downed At Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team lost 90-68 Saturday afternoon against Northwest Missouri in MIAA play at Bearcat Arena.

Central Oklahoma took a two-game win streak into Maryville, but is now 3-5 following the setback.

"I honestly am proud of our team for the intensity they showed today and the fight they showed," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "Northwest is a good team and they made a lot shots today, but I love our guys. We fought hard and although it wasn't enough to win today, it will be enough to win some other games so we need to play like this every night."

Central Oklahoma came out firing Saturday afternoon, showing not a glimmer of fear for a team facing the No. 3 Northwest Missouri Bearcats on their home floor.

Callen Haydon made a layup off an assist from Isaiah Wade and put the Bronchos ahead on the scoreboard, 2-0. Then Camryn Givens knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 5-0 and after Jaden Wells stole the ball on one end, Givens knocked down a second 3-pointer to make it 8-0.

Northwest finally got on the board with a 3-pointer at the 17:03 mark in the first half. After Haydon put a jump shot through to make it 10-3, Northwest went on a big run.

The first five baskets Northwest made Saturday were all 3-pointers. Plus a couple of free-throws and NWMSU had a 17-2 run in the works. Jaden Wells hit a 3-pointer to end that run, but Northwest just kept pushing back.

Northwest led by as many as 18 points in the first half, 48-30, and most of that was thanks to a lights-out performance behind the 3-point line. Northwest in the first 20 minutes hit 11 of 19 shots from behind the arc and led 51-34 at the break.

A 5-0 run by Wade cut the deficit to 15 early in the second half. A 5-0 run by Shemar Smith cut the deficit to 14 points midway through the second half. But the Bearcats kept pushing back.

Smith hit a 3-pointer with 6:47 to play in the second half and that cut the deficit to 16 points. That was the closest Central would get down the stretch.

Wade led the Bronchos with 14 points and eight rebounds. Haydon scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds to go with three assists. And Smith added a season-high 12 points off the bench.

Givens finished with nine thanks to three 3-point field goals. And Davon Richardson also scored nine points before fouling out. Richardson had three, three-point plays but didn't make a 3-pointer Saturday. He made a layup plus a free-throw, then hit three free-throws after being fouled on a shot, and made another layup plus a free-throw to reach nine points on the day.

Wells finished with six points on two made 3-pointers. Austin Fenton scored three off the bench in reserve duty, Justin Nimmer scored two, and Jalyn Turner added one point.

Central Oklahoma finished the day shooting 40 percent. The Bronchos made 24 of 60 shots overall, 9 of 22 threes, and 11 of 16 free-throws.

UCO is back home next week. The Bronchos are scheduled to play host to Emporia State and Washburn next Thursday and Saturday at Hamilton Field House.
