Central Oklahoma Rolls Past Central Missouri

Bronchos Earn Win Following 26-Day Layoff

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team never trailed in an onslaught victory over Central Missouri Thursday night and the Bronchos rolled to an 89-70 victory in the MIAA game at Hamilton Field House.

Jalyn Turner scored the game's first basket and after Central Missouri tied it 2-2, Turner hit a 3-pointer to give the Bronchos a 5-2 lead. UCO never looked back.

"We played really well early and that gave us a lot of confidence," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "I believe we are really talented and when we play with the confidence we did tonight, we see good things happen. I'm proud of the team too for playing so well when we haven't played since December 19. That's a long time off and they did really well coming out tonight."

UCO hit five 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. Callen Haydon, Jaden Wells, Camryn Givens, and Turner each hit one. Carson Calavan sank one from outside too. The Bronchos also got a big first-half boost thanks to several trips to the charity stripe. UCO hit 11 of 13 free-throws in the first 20 minutes, with three each from Haydon and Wells leading the way.

The Bronchos shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half, hitting 13 of 24 shots including their five 3-pointers. Central Oklahoma led by as many as 17 points, 31-14, with just over six minutes to play in the opening half. UCO led by 15 at halftime, 42-27.

The second half was all Central too – Central Oklahoma.

The Bronchos took a 15-point lead at the break and ballooned it to 27, 81-54, with just over five minutes to play in the second half.

Central Oklahoma hit 54.9 percent of its shots Thursday night on its way to a season-high 89 points.

Four Bronchos scored in double figures Thursday. Haydon led the way with 20 points and seven assists to go with three rebounds. Haydon hit all three of his 3-point attempts and all nine of his free-throw attempts. He hit 4 of 6 field goals too.

Givens added 18 points and six rebounds. He hit 7 of 10 shots and a pair of 3-pointers. Wells finished with a season-high 14 points. The true freshman hit three 3-pointers and hit all five of his free-throw attempts. Shemar Smith joined the double figure crowd with 11 points. He hit all four of his shots, including both 3-pointers he took. Smith added one free-throw and a couple of rebounds.

Central Oklahoma is off this weekend though that wasn't the intent. The Broncho game Saturday against Lincoln has been postponed to Feb. 2. UCO will next take the court a week from Thursday in Maryville, Mo. against Northwest Missouri State.
