Know The 'Chos: Keats Calhoon

The University of Central Oklahoma athletic department is showcasing its student-athletes each Monday this fall with a quick glance at who your favorite Bronchos are on and off the field in a segment called Know The 'Chos, sponsored by McBride Orthopedic Hospital.

Up this week is a veteran quarterback that has led his team to victory with precision over the past few years but has also had one interesting journey along the way.

This Tulsa, Okla. native sat out a redshirt season, then spent a year as a backup learning from Central's all-time passing leader. As a sophomore, he competed in a fierce quarterback battle in training camp and won the starting job. But he also went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 3 of that year.

During his second sophomore season, he found his way back into the starting lineup and helped the Bronchos two a 63-0 win in Wantland Stadium, which at the time tied the mark for the biggest victory inside UCO's home confines. But again, he would go down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 6.

Despite that limited action, the QB does have 1,173 career passing yards and nine passing touchdowns. His 57.6 completion percentage is his best asset.

Now a junior, the quarterback was ready to compete for his job again before the season was suspended due to the current health crisis.

Here's the file:

Name: Keats Calhoon

Sport: Football

Class: Junior

Major: Accounting

Favorite memory at Central: My favorite memory was winning the Corsicana Bowl my second year here. That was a fun trip and ended great with us handily winning the bowl game.

Best part of UCO: The best part about UCO in general is the culture. I love the place here, especially the football culture. Coach Bobeck really cares about us.

More about this student-athlete: Led UCO to a 63-0 win over Lincoln in Week 3 of the 2019 season – in his first start of the season – and held Central tie the record for largest margin of victory at Wantland Stadium. He threw for 575 yards and three touchdowns in four appearances last season before going out with an injury.

In 2018, he showed why he won the job in a hurry, totaling 572 yards and five touchdowns in just 10 quarters of play. He was 47-for-75 passing (62.7 percent) in his time on the field and totaled over 100 rushing yards in two and a half games.

The former Victory Christian High School Class 3A All-Star pick enjoyed a phenomenal prep career, passing for 12,538 yards and 118 TDs as a four-year starter. He is No. 2 in state history for most passing yards in a career.
