Central Drops Road Contest At Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team lost 81-73 on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to Fort Hays State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.
 
The Bronchos are now 7-17 overall and 4-11 in league play. Central has dropped eight in a row for the first time since the 1950-51 season.
 
Central Oklahoma played well in the first half. The Bronchos who 44.4 percent from the floor, hitting six 3-pointers, and going 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.
 
There were five lead changes in the opening half. The Bronchos, which had its biggest lead, 14-9, with 13:14 to play in the first half, and last held a lead at 23-21, with just under six minutes to play in the half.
 
Central tied the game on three different occasions down the stretch in the first half. Fort Hays State led 41-38 at halftime.
 
Central did not lead again.
 
Fort Hays State slowly opened up a big lead in the second half, leading by as many as 16, 78-62, with four minutes left. UCO chipped away to cut it back to single digits, and had it down to six with two minutes to spare, but couldn't close the gap in the end.
 
Justin Nimmer led the Bronchos with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Nimmer hit one 3-pointer and was 7-for-11 from the free-throw line.
 
Dashon Bell scored 18 points and was 7-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-3 from behind the arc, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Bell added a team-high seven assists.
 
Camryn Givens also scored in double figures, chipping in 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
 
UCO is home for the remainder of the regular season. The Bronchos host Newman next Saturday, Emporia State the following Saturday, and then plays Nebraska Kearney and FHSU at the end of the month.
