UCO Routs Newman

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team snapped a rare losing skid with an emphatic rout of Newman in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Hamilton Field House, Saturday, taking the league game 77-51.

Central Oklahoma improved to 8-17 overall with the win and is now 5-11 in the MIAA.

"I'm proud of this team," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "There's no secret things haven't been going well and these kids have not given up. They keep fighting and their attitude and effort has been great."

Dashawn McDowell led UCO with a game-high 19 points. The junior was 8-for-13 from the floor, hit two 3-pointers, and also had five rebounds. Both Justin Nimmer and Dashon Bell added 11 points, with Nimmer's six rebounds leading the Bronchos. D.J. Basey scored 10 points off the bench on a 5-for-6 day from the floor.

Newman scored the game's first basket, a 3-pointer, but after the Bronchos went on a short run to follow. Bell hit a 3-pointer and Nimmer dunked his first basket to give Central a 5-3 lead.

The Bronchos never trailed again.

UCO hit 16 of 30 shots in the opening period, pulling ahead by as many as 12, and putting itself in the driver's seat. Central only hit two 3-pointers in the opening half and just two free-throws, but its stellar work on getting to the basket, solid defense that forced 10 turnovers, and a big performance on the glass, outrebounding Newman 17-10 in the first half, helped the Bronchos to a good first 20 minutes.

Central blew it out in the second half. A 10-0 run at the midway point sparked the onslaught.

Basey slammed home a basket at the 15:24 mark in the second half. A McDowell layup followed, Cooper Clark knocked down a jumper after that, Camryn Givens hit one of two free-throws, then Nimmer sank a 3-pointer. UCO went from a 12-point lead, 43-31, to a 20-point lead after that 2:59 flurry.

The Bronhcos hit 17 of 31 shots in the second half, four 3-pointers, and three free-throws. Central's 28-point lead and eventual victory was the biggest lead of the game.

Givens scored six points for the Bronchos and also had five rebounds. He was one of three Bronchos with at least five. Nimmer's six led the way and McDowell also had five.

Clark finished with five points, Carson Calavan and Alex Ogunseye both had four. Landon Streich knocked down a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left for his first career basket. He finished with three. Seth Hurd and Colt Savage both scored two.

UCO only played one this week and will do the same next week. The Bronchos host Emporia State next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
