Savage Sparks UCO Past Hornets

EDMOND (Feb. 22) – Colt Savage scored six of his career-high 19 points during a late first-half surge that put Central Oklahoma in front and the Bronchos went on to down Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State 75-65 Saturday afternoon.

It was the second straight win for the Bronchos, who improved to 9-17 overall and 6-11 in the conference as they fight for a spot in the MIAA Postseason Tournament.

"We talk about the song "Lean on Me" in the locker room and I was just impressed with how hard my guys fought for each other today," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "They fought every second of every possession to make things happen. There were many, many guys who stepped up and did their job."

Leading scorer and rebounder Camryn Givens missed the game with injury, but UCO made up for his absence with a balanced attack led by Savage.

The sophomore sharpshooter made four 3-pointers in his 19-point outing while adding five rebounds. Dashon Bell scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and Justin Nimmer came up big with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Cooper Clark chipped in eight points, while Carson Calavan dished out nine assists.

The Bronchos trailed most of the first half and were down six (31-25) in the final minutes when Savage got going. He drilled a wing 3-pointer at 2:46, then answered an Emporia bucket with another long-distance dagger at 2:11.

The teams traded misses until Clark splashed through a corner 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to put the Bronchos on top 34-33 at intermission.

UCO would never trail again, though the game was tied at 38-all before Savage again drained a trey from the wing. Clark followed an ESU miss with a fast-break layup to give the Bronchos a 43-38 lead.

Central appeared to be home free after pushing its advantage to 14 at 60-46 with 7:37 left before the Hornets got back in the game with a 12-2 run that made it 62-58 at the 4:16 mark.

But there would be no denying the Bronchos.

Dashawn McDowell muscled inside for back-to-back layups to push the lead back to nine (67-58) with 2:46 left and UCO secured the win at the free throw line down the stretch.

The Bronchos wrap up the regular season next week, hosting Fort Hays State Thursday and Nebraska-Kearney Saturday.
