Bronchos Back Home This Weekend

Central Oklahoma resumes a lengthy homestand this weekend when the Bronchos play five games while hosting the UCO Classic.

It's the second of three straight weekend events for the Bronchos, who held the UCO Invitational last week and will host the UCO Festival next week.

Central, 7-5 on the young season, open play at 2 p.m. Friday against Colorado-Colorado Springs (2-4) and then take on Colorado Christian (7-3) at 4 p.m. The Bronchos return Saturday to face Chadron State (3-3) at 2 p.m. and Lubbock Christian (9-0) at 4 p.m. before finishing against St. Edward's (4-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"We played pretty well last weekend and hopefully can continue that," head coach Cody White said. "We're going to be playing some good teams and need to be ready to go. We've still got a long ways to go, but I like the way this team is working and how focused they are on getting better."

UCO recovered from a 1-5 start to the season by going 6-0 last weekend, outscoring those six times a combined 45-9.

The Bronchos hit .372 and had a 1.08 earned run average as a team last week.

Hazel Puempel led the offense by hitting a staggering .650 (13-for-20) with five doubles, a home run and eight runs batted in to earn MIAA Hitter of the Week honors. Brighton Gilbert had a .476 average (10-for-21).

Kylee Lynch and Corrina Rivas both went 3-0 in the pitching circle. Lynch had a 0.00 ERA, giving up just two unearned runs in 13 innings, while Rivas had a 1.47 ERA after allowing four earned runs in 19 innings.

Puempel is hitting .526 for the season. The senior standout ranks second in the country in hits (20) and doubles (six) and is sixth in total bases (29).

Gilbert is batting .410, while Audrie Morrison (.333) and Lexy Dobson (.325) are also over the .300 mark.

Lynch is 3-1 on the season with an 0.82 ERA and Rias is 4-3 with a 1.10 ERA.
