UCO Grounded In Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team lost 90-68 at Newman Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos dropped to 1-4 this season with the setback.

"We ran into a Newman team that couldn't miss and we happened to have a bad day on offense at the same time," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "That's a recipe for disaster. The way Newman was hitting shots today, and give all the credit to them for that, but the way they were hitting shots today we would have had to play really well to compete and we didn't."

Central saw Newman run away in the first half, building an early double digit lead it wouldn't relinquish. Newman ended up hitting 13 3-pointers and added 19 free-throws to aid the cause. UCO shot just 29.5 percent from the floor, hitting 18 of 61 shots, and 22.2 percent from behind the arc, hitting 6 of 27 from outside. The Bronchos also made 26 of 37 free-throw attempts on the day.

Camryn Givens led Central with 12 points and nine rebounds. Justin Nimmer scored 11 points and added three rebounds. And Callen Haydon scored 10 points to go with three rebounds.

Newman made the game's first basket, but Seth Hurd added a two on the other end to tie the game. Callen Haydon then made one of two free-throw attempts to give Central an early 3-2 lead, but Newman took it right back and then never looked back in running away with the game early.

Newman doubled up Central, 10-5, then again at 16-8. But it was after the second media timeout of the first half, with UCO trailing 19-13, that Newman made its big run. Central was still in the game with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, however, a 16-0 run by the Jets changed things in a hurry.

Shemar Smith's layup with 10:13 to go made it 19-13, Newman. The Bronchos didn't score again until Justin Nimmer put in a layup out of the under-5 media to make it 35-15 with 4:31 to play in the first half.

Central trailed 46-19 at halftime.

The Bronchos played better in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome. UCO utilized the free-throw line to find its points. The Bronchos through the first 10 minutes of the second half had scored 14 points, with nine coming from the free-throw line and five more coming from Jalyn Turner buckets.

UCO kept that going. Its next nine points included five more free-throws.

But again, in the end the deficit was too much. Central ended the game on an 11-2 run thanks to a barrage of 3-pointers. Conner Calavan hit two with just over one minute to play and Jaden Wells added another with 30 seconds left. Austin Fenton also scored the game's final bucket to bring the score to 90-68.

Turner added eight points, Carson Calavan scored six, and Davon Richardson, Smith, and Wells all scored five. Hurd finished with four and Fenton, two.

Central Oklahoma is off for a short holiday break. The Bronchos return to action Wednesday, Dec. 30 in a makeup game against Emporia State. UCO will travel north to take on ESU before returning home for a Jan. 2 matchup with Fort Hays State at Hamilton Field House.
