Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Brannick

Central Outlasted By Pittsburg State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team dropped another Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association contest, falling to Pittsburg State 77-66 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma held a small lead early but trailed for more than 34 minutes on the afternoon. The playing catch-up style didn't suit the Bronchos on Saturday.

"We put ourselves in a tough spot and we didn't shoot the ball very well," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "It's hard to win when you don't shoot it well and we didn't make things any easier on ourselves. But we do have a great group of guys and we did some things better Saturday than we did Thursday. So we just need to keep improving."

Central Oklahoma shot just 35.4 percent from the field Saturday. The Bronchos hit 4 of 14 shots from outside the arc, and went 16-for-22 from the free-throw line. Pittsburg State was 10 percent better overall and added six more 3-pointers than the Bronchos while keeping an even 15-for-22 mark at the charity stripe.

Justin Nimmer led Central with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists Saturday. He shot 5-for-13 overall, hit one 3-pointer, and made four free-throws. Isaiah Wade scored 14 points and added a game-high 14 rebounds. He was 7-for-13 overall on the afternoon.

UCO did have nine other players score, and only turned the ball over 11 times on the day. But once Pittsburg State took a lead with 8:36 to play in the first half, the Gorillas countered every blow by the Bronchos with one of their own.

Central led 12-8 after a D.J. Basey slam with 12:28 to play in the first half. The Bronchos led 14-11 when Callen Haydon knocked down a jump shot at the 10:29 mark. But an 8-0 run followed by Pittsburg State and that was the last time the Bronchos held an advangtage.

Central did trail by just three points at halftime, 33-30, and cut the deficit to only one point, 35-34, early in the second half. But Pitt State had an answer for every Broncho attack, eventually growing its marginal lead to a more comfortable one.

Colt Savage added eight points and Haydon finished with seven points. Camryn Givens and Seth Hurd both scored five, Shemar Smith four, Kobe Higgins three, and Davon Richardson and Basey had two apiece. Jalyn Turner scored one point.

Central Oklahoma is off next week for Thanksgiving, but will travel to Topeka, Kan. on a Monday night for a matchup with Washburn. UCO faces Emporia State on the road as well in two weeks.
