UCO Downed At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball lost a road contest 81-71 Monday night at Washburn, falling short in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup at Lee Arena.

Central held a lead in the second half after quickly erasing a halftime defecit. The Bronchos led 54-52 with just over nine minutes before Washburn made its biggest run of the game and took the lead for good before eventually pulling away in the end.

"We played really good tonight and we keep playing better," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "But we didn't play good enough in the end. We didn't play good enough when it mattered. The good thing is, and I never want to lose, but there are some things we can take from this one and I think we'll keep getting better going forward."

Isaiah Wade led all Central scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Monday was the senior forward's second double-double in as many games. He is averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds per game through three games this season.

UCO did have four players score in double figures Monday night. Colt Savage scored 12 points, hitting 3 of 5 threes and three more free-throws. Callen Haydon also scored 12 points, leading the team with eight made free-throws. And Justin Nimmer rounded out the foursome with 10 points.

Central Oklahoma started off in a big way Monday night. On the first play of the game, a play drawn well and executed better ended with Wade slamming home an alley-oop to give UCO a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Wade slammed home another big dunk, this time over Washburn big man Jonny Clausing, who fouled Wade on the play. After Wade sank the free-throw, Central held an early 9-4 lead.

UCO led by as many as nine in the first half. Nimmer stole a pass near halfcourt and his fastbreak layup put the Bronchos up 22-13. Washburn answered with a late run in the first half to go up 37-34 at halftime. The latter part of the first half would be a sign of what was to come.

Out of halftime, Wade made a layup on the opening possession to cut a Washburn lead down to one point. On the next Broncho possession, Savage hit one of his 3-pointers to give UCO 39-37 lead. The Bronchos went back-and-forth for a bit with Washburn, leading by as many as five, 46-41, when Davon Richardson knocked down a jumper from the top of the key with 13:31 to play.

Central went up by three, 52-49, on another Savage 3-pointer, then Washburn's Tyler Nelson started what would be the ultimate blow for the Ichabods. He hit a 3-pointer to tie it, 52-52, then followed a Nimmer bucket with another 3-pointer to give Washburn the lead, 55-54, then hit a third consecutive 3-pointer to make it 58-54.

Central never led again.

Camryn Givens scored eight points and gathered five rebounds to chip in. Carson Calavan added five points including one 3-pointer. And Richardson, Seth Hurd, and D.J. Basey each scored two.

Central Oklahoma will continue a week-long road trip with a matchup at Emporia State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Bronchos return home Saturday, Dec. 12 to take on Nebraska-Kearney.
