Bronchos Bested At Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team went blow-for-blow with Emporia State Sunday afternoon but couldn't deal the final shot and lost 92-84 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Central Oklahoma is now 7-13 overall and 4-7 in the MIAA.

UCO took a 73-69 lead with 4:27 to play in the game, but after Emporia went ahead 75-73, and then broke a 75-75 tie following the day's final media timeout with 3:57 to play, the Bronchos couldn't recover down the stretch.

Camryn Givens led UCO with 17 points. The sophomore scored nine in a row to bring the Bronchos from down six, 63-57, to ahead by one, 66-65. Givens earned a layup plus the foul, then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Bronchos ahead. Givens finished 4-for-8 from the floor, 3-for-4 from behind the arc, and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Dashawn McDowell added 16 points. The junior was 7-for-14 from the floor, hit one 3-pointer, and added two steals and two rebounds.

Central went back and forth with Emporia in the first half as well Sunday afternoon. McDowell made the game's first shot, a 3-pointer from the corner, to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead. ESU then went up 9-5 a couple of minutes later, but the Bronchos responded to that to take a 12-11 lead out of the first media timeout of the game with 11:38 to play.

UCO led by as many five, 23-18 before the second media timout. Colt Savage, Cooper Clark, and Carson Calavan each made 3-pointers on three straight possessions. Emporia rallied again to take a lead, 28-27, with five minutes to play. And after Central went back ahead 35-32 on a pair of free-throws by D.J. Basey with 1:17 to play, ESU made a late rally, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to take a 41-36 halftime lead.

UCO battled back in the second half, taking a 50-49 lead on another Calavan three with just under 15 minutes to play. After ESU rallied to take a lead midway through the half, Givens took over to give Central its last lead of the game.
