Bronchos Stay Perfect In Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Sept. 7) – Five players had double-digit kills to lead No. 22-ranked Central Oklahoma to a tough four-set triumph over Tiffin (Ohio) in the Eckerd Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos prevailed 27-25, 25-16, 16-25, 28-26 in the two-hour battle and moved to 3-0 in the season-opening event. UCO takes on the host Tritons at 6:30 p.m. (Oklahoma time) to wrap up the tournament.

"That was a hard match and I'm really happy with the way our team battled," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We played well at times and showed a lot of fight. It's been a good weekend for us so far and hopefully we can finish it off right."

Freshman Bailey Combs continued her impressive weekend, leading Central's balanced attack with 16 kills and a .351 attack percentage. Lauren Jenkins hit .316 with 15 kills and also had 10 digs and Alycia Bradley-Adriano had 12 kills.

Malia Kaaiohelo hit .346 with 11 kills and Amanda Desch had 10 kills, 34 assists and 19 digs. The Bronchos also got 19 assists, 10 digs and three kills from Ericka Scholl, 22 digs from Dominique Lipari and 10 digs from Bella Burns.

UCO rallied from a 17-14 deficit to take the opening set, getting three kills from Combs and a solo block from Kaaiohelo in a 5-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. The Dragons came back to tie it at 20 and it was deadlocked again at 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 before kills by Combs and Kaaiohelo ended it.

The second set was close early and was tied 12-12 when Jenkins knocked down two kills in a 4-0 spurt that put Central ahead to stay. Bradley-Adriano had five kills the rest of the way as the Bronchos pulled away.

Tiffin broke away from an early tie to take the third set and then used a late comeback to make things interesting in the fourth.

Desch had four kills in a 9-2 run that gave UCO a 21-15 lead and it was a 24-21 cushion after a Combs kill, but the Dragons reeled off four unanswered points to go up 25-24. A serve error tied it and it was knotted again at 26 before Kaaiohelo hammered down back-to-back kills to close out the set and the match.
