UCO Suffers First Loss

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Sept. 7) – No. 22-ranked Central Oklahoma fell behind early and never recovered in dropping a four-set decision to the host school in the final match of the Eckerd Invitational Saturday night.

The Bronchos lost the first two sets 25-18, 25-19 before staying alive with a 25-13 rout only to see the Tritons rally late for a 26-24 victory in the fourth set to close out the match. It was Central's first loss after three wins in the opening weekend of the season.

"We were up-and-down the whole match and just didn't play well enough to win," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It was a disappointing way to end the weekend, but overall I was pretty pleased with how we did. We learned a lot about ourselves and the things we need to work on moving forward."

Amanda Desch led UCO, hitting .357 with 12 kills and just two errors in 28 attacks while adding 19 assists and three total blocks. Bailey Combs had eight kills and two assisted blocks to complete a solid weekend for the freshman hitter.

Malia Kaaiohelo had six kills, four blocks and three service aces, with Courtney Lane also contributing six kills. Ericka Scholl chipped in 13 assists, 11 digs and two kills, while Dominique Lipari had a team-high 15 digs.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Eckerd quickly surged in front 11-7. UCO pulled within a point at 14-13 after a Chloe Hancock kill before the Tritons ripped off eight unanswered points to pull away.

Eckerd never trailed in the second set to seize control of the match, with Central overcoming an early deficit in the third set to stay alive.

The Bronchos were down 4-1 in the third before getting two kills from Alycia Bradley-Adriano in a 6-1 run to take a 7-5 lead. It was an 11-8 advantage when UCO broke it open, scoring seven straight points.

Central was down 4-0 and 9-3 in the fourth set before coming back to tie it at 11-all on a Scholl ace. Kaaiohelo had two blocks during a 4-0 spurt that put the Bronchos on top 20-18 and it was a 24-22 lead after a Desch kill, but the Tritons scored the final four points to close out the match.

UCO makes its home debut Wednesday, hosting Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m.
