No. 22 Bronchos Roll On

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Sept. 6) – No. 22-ranked Central Oklahoma polished off a perfect opening day to the 2019 season with a second straight sweep in the Eckerd Invitational Friday afternoon.

The Bronchos eased past West Liberty State (W.Va.) 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 after earlier rolling over Malone (Ohio). UCO finishes up the two-day event Saturday with matches against Tiffin (Ohio) and the host Tritons.

"We didn't play that well and struggled some with our offense, but it was still a good win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It's a learning process for this team with all the newcomers we have and I'm proud of the way we competed today."

Freshman Bailey Combs led another balanced attack, hitting .381 with nine kills and one error in 21 attacks. Sophomore Lauren Jenkins added seven kills, while rookie Courtney Lane had six.

Central also got four kills apiece from Malia Kaahiohelo and Chloe Hancock. Amanda Desch dished out 24 assists to go along with 16 digs and three blocks, Dominique Lipari had a match-high 19 digs and Ericka Scholl had 11 digs along with two service aces.

Lane had back-to-back kills to break a 1-1 tie in the first set and UCO never trailed again in taking control of the match. The Bronchos trailed 13-11 in the second set before consecutive kills by Combs and Lane keyed a 5-2 run that put Central on top to stay.

The third set went back-and-forth throughout. The Hilltoppers were up 14-12, but then Scholl had a pair of aces in a 7-1 spurt that put UCO on top 19-15 and Jenkins knocked down a key kill down the stretch to help close out the set – and the match.
