Bronchos Topple Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. (Sept. 27) – Lauren Jenkins and Amanda Desch knocked down 15 kills apiece to lead Central Oklahoma to a four-set Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Fort Hays State Friday night.

The two teams split the first two sets -- each winning 25-20 -- before the Bronchos claimed 25-19, 25-11 wins in the final two to pull out the crucial league victory. UCO, now 10-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, goes to Kearney, Neb. Saturday to challenge No. 3-ranked and unbeaten Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m.

"That was a big win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It's tough to win on the road in this league and I'm happy with the way we came together tonight. We pulled out a tough one in the third set and then really took charge in the fourth."

Desch hit a sizzling .600, collecting her 15 kills with no errors in 25 attacks while adding 23 assists, nine digs and two blocks. Jenkins matched her sophomore teammate in kills as both tied a career high.

Dominique Lipari was a defensive whiz again for the Bronchos in digging up 35 FHSU attacks, a season best and just one off her career high. Freshman Regan Inglis hit .368 with nine kills and two miscues in 19 attacks to go along with three blocks.

The Bronchos also got six kills and two blocks from rookie Courtney Lane, while Ericka Scholl chipped in 24 assists and 10 digs.

Central fell behind 2-0 to open the first set, used a pair of Malia Kaaiohelo service aces to take a 4-2 lead and went up 10-6 before the Tigers rallied to go ahead 17-14.

The Bronchos responded with nine unanswered points to move in front 23-17 as Lipari had two aces and Jenkins a pair of kills. Jenkins had UCO's final two kills to close out the set.

FHSU came back to take the second set by the same 25-20 score in squaring the match, but UCO was not to be denied.

The Bronchos never trailed in the third set after taking a quick 2-0 lead on a Desch kill and combined block by Desch and Inglis, but it was close all the way. UCO led 18-17 before taking control with a 5-0 run, getting a Desch kill and Scholl ace along with three Tiger errors.

FHSU closed to within 23-19 before back-to-back kills by Desch and Inglis ended it.

The fourth set was tie early at 4-4 before Central seized command with a devastating 17-2 run. Inglis had three kills and a block and Bella Burns two aces in that spurt as the Bronchos went up 21-6 before cruising in to close out the match.
